Blue Jays’ Daulton Varsho homers again in third single-A rehab game

July 23, 2025 by Blue Jays Nation

It’s nice to see Daulton Varsho’s bat hasn’t missed a beat.

Recovering from a left hamstring strain, Varsho left the yard for the second time in three games at single-A Dunedin on Tuesday, blasting a solo home run — 102.1 m.p.h. off the bat — in his second of three at-bats. He also recorded a single in his final plate appearance before departing after the top half of the sixth inning.

The 29-year-old struck out in his only other at-bat, going 2-for-3 on the night with a pair of runs scored and his solo shot. It was his fourth overall rehab game after returning to game action in the Florida Complex League on July 17.

Varsho played all six innings in centre field Tuesday, just as he did during his second single-A rehab game on Sunday, where he went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and drove in another run on a groundout.

Next steps for Varsho will likely include transferring his rehab assignment to triple-A Buffalo, as manager John Schneider told reporters ahead of Monday’s series opener versus the New York Yankees.

Schneider said initially that Varsho would require 5-7 rehab games before being activated from the IL, setting him up to play multiple contests with the Bisons before potentially returning this weekend in Detroit.

The 2024 Gold Glove winner last played in the majors on May 31 versus the Athletics, where he injured his hamstring while running from second to third base. It’s been an injury-riddled 2025 campaign for Toronto’s centre-fielder, who didn’t make his season debut until Apr. 29 due to off-season shoulder surgery.

When healthy, Varsho has been crucial for the Blue Jays, both at the plate and in the field. He’s hit eight home runs and driven in 20 across 24 games this season, slashing .207/.240/.543 with a 103 wRC+ (100 league average). Defensively, he’s logged 188 innings in centre, registering five defensive runs saved, four outs above average and a plus-three fielding run value.

Myles Straw has filled in admirably for Varsho thus far — particularly in centre, where he ranks third among major-league outfielders in DRS (11) while posting six OAA and a plus-six FRV across 403.1 innings.
