The Blue Jays demoted slumping left fielder Teoscar Hernandez to Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.
Hernandez’s bat was never supposed to be the problem. Despite too many strikeouts, he often made up for it with power and clutch hitting.
The problem was supposed on be defence, where Hernandez never looked entirely comfortable in his first two years with the Jays.
But that narrative was flipped on its head in the first two months of this season. His .189/.262/.299 slashline led to Thursday’s move, with infielder Richard Urena called up for Thursday’s series opener against the White Sox in Chicago.
“For sure his confidence is down. Everybody can tell by looking at him,” manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters in San Francisco after Wednesday’s game, in which Hernandez, dropped to sixth in the order, went 0-for-4 — all strikeouts.
