Blue Jays GDB 161.0: Trey Yesavage aims to shrink AL East magic number

September 28, 2025 by Blue Jays Nation

The Toronto Blue Jays will look to make it three consecutive wins and shrink their magic number to clinch the American League East as they continue their series at Rogers Centre against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage will look to rebound from a tough outing in Kansas City against the Royals in his last start. Yesavage allowed four runs on five hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts across four innings.

The 22-year-old will be making his first career start in front of the home fans at Rogers Centre after starting his MLB career with a pair of outings on the road. Overall, Yesavage has a 5.00 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts over nine innings in his first two starts.

The Rays, meanwhile, will counter with right-hander Joe Boyle. Boyle is 1-3 with a 4.40 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and 53 strikeouts in 47 innings this season. He was excellent in his lone meeting with the Blue Jays in 2025, tossing six scoreless innings with four hits and five strikeouts on 78 pitches.

Boyle averages 98.6 mph with his fastball, which ranks in the 96th percentile among MLB pitchers, according to Baseball Savant. He has been susceptible to allowing hard contact, sitting in the ninth percentile (11.3%) and 13th percentile (45.2%) in barrel rate and hard-hit rate. Boyle’s also struggled with walks this season.
