Blue Jays Nation’s Top 25 Canadian Baseball Prospects for 2026: #24 Indigo Diaz

January 28, 2026 by Blue Jays Nation

In this next installment of the 2026 version of Blue Jays Nation’s Top 25 Canadian baseball prospects list is a pitcher who’s floated around Minor League Baseball, and is a name that may already be familiar to baseball fans north of the border.

#24 – Indigo Diaz

Hometown: North Vancouver, BC
Organization: Arizona Diamondbacks
Draft: 27th round, 2019 (ATL)
Position: Relief Pitcher
Bats/Throws: Right/Right

Indigo Diaz established himself early as one of the top amateur arms in Canada. At Handsworth Secondary School, the North Vancouver native was named Provincial Pitcher of the Year and Provincial MVP, serving as team captain during his junior and senior seasons. He carried that success into summer ball with the Coquitlam Reds, posting a 9–1 record, 1.24 ERA, and 104 strikeouts over 73 innings.

Diaz’s dominance continued at Iowa Western Community College, where he became one of the premier JUCO pitchers in the country. His sophomore campaign stood out, as he posted an 11–1 record with a 1.52 ERA and a staggering 14 K/9, helping lead the Reivers to the JUCO World Series and earning NJCAA All-American honours. That performance elevated his profile and led to a transfer to Michigan State University’s Division I program.

After transferring, Diaz continued to refine his craft against Big Ten competition, eventually transitioning into the Spartans’ closer role during his junior year. His 6-foot-5 frame and mid-90s fastball attracted professional interest, leading the Atlanta Braves to select him in the 27th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.

Following the lost 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Diaz worked his way back into form in the Braves’ system, pitching at the High-A and Double-A levels. Ahead of the 2023 season, he was traded to the New York Yankees organization, though his year was cut short by season-ending Tommy John surgery.

2025 Season

Despite the roadblocks, Diaz spent the 2025 campaign at Double-A Somerset in the Yankees system, delivering one of the strongest seasons of his professional career. Over 52 1/3 innings, he posted a 2.58 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Diaz’s arsenal is built around a fastball and a slider that serves as his primary swing-and-miss pitch, particularly against right-handed hitters, and he had never posted a strikeout rate below 9.8 K/9 before 2025.

That season, his strikeout rate dipped to 7.9 K/9, but it came alongside improved command and efficiency, limiting hard contact and allowing him to consistently work in leverage situations. The result was his first 50-plus inning season in professional baseball.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Following the 2025 season, Diaz elected free agency and signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks, marking the latest stop in a professional journey that has tested his adaptability. At 27, he profiles as experienced upper-minors bullpen depth, with the physical tools and résumé to potentially push into MLB late in the season.

Diaz is also a familiar name for Team Canada fans. During the 2023 World Baseball Classic, he appeared in two relief outings, posting a 2.70 ERA as Canada looks to push beyond pool play in the upcoming tournament.

Diaz’s consistent production at each stop of professional baseball, paired with his impressive 2025 campaign, has earned him a spot on Blue Jays Nation’s Top 25 Canadian Prospects list after receiving an honourable mention last year. If his command continues to improve and his stuff plays against upper-level hitters, Diaz remains a legitimate candidate to contribute meaningful innings within the Diamondbacks organization in 2026.
