Blue Jays Option Struggling Left-Hander Easton Lucas to Minors

April 22, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Blue Jays optioned Easton Lucas to Triple-A after his second bad start in a row.

The Toronto Blue Jays have optioned Easton Lucas to Triple-A Buffalo and called up Josh Walker, who has performed well for the Bisons. Walker sports a 2.57 ERA across six games with 10 strikeouts. Lucas performed well across two starts for the Blue Jays, but then had troubles with giving up home runs. He surrendered 14 runs across his last two starts. including five home runs. Lucas had a good run going, but unfortunately hitters figured him out all too quickly. Still, he was able to outpitch Mackenzie Gore and Garrett Crochet in back to back starts.

Blue Jays Option Easton Lucas to Triple-A, Call Up Josh Walker

The Blue Jays had to do a roster shakeup in the bullpen on Sunday with Nick Sandlin heading to the 15-day injured list. Now the roster changes affect the rotation. Max Scherzer continues to rehab his thumb, and has received a second cortisone shot. The veteran could rejoin the Blue Jays in a few weeks. But if he doesn’t, the Blue Jays pitching depth will be tested.

Lucas’ last outing hurt the Blue Jays as he surrendered seven hits and six earned runs. He was only able to record five outs in the Blue Jays 8-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners. It was a tough blow for the rookie, who successfully went two starts without allowing a run. With a 2-2 record and a 7.41 ERA, Lucas can take the time to reset and adjust in the minors.

The Blue Jays will have to figure out their fifth rotation spot versus the New York Yankees this weekend. Paxton Schultz, who made history in his debut with the Blue Jays on Sunday, could be called upon. But the Blue Jays could also push the starters against the Yankees and then get them an extra day of rest the following turn. This would put Chris Bassitt in line to face the Bronx Bombers instead of having a fifth rotation spot.
