Toronto Blue Jays called up outfielder Addison Barger on April 15th, and he’s giving them plenty of reasons to keep him on the roster. Barger was called up on April 15th as Nathan Lukes went on paternity leave, but has remained with the team. Barger deserves to stay in the big leagues on account of his defense and the flashes of offense we’ve witnessed across nine games. He’s been solid through a small sample size, which makes that much more impressive.
Addison Barger Earning Spot on Blue Jays Roster
Why Barger Has Stood Out
His most impressive game was on April 18th against the Seattle Mariners. He demonstrated his cannon of an arm by recording not one but three outfield assists. As well, he contributed to an incredible double play. Forget about calling him Barger, his nickname should be Bar-field with his impressive defensive play. Barger is also only 25 years old, so he has much room to grow.
It would be interesting to see how Barger performs if he continues to get more playing time. In his last seven games for the Blue Jays, he’s hit .313 with two RBIs and a walk. While the Blue Jays’ offense has been hot and cold, it has been encouraging to see Barger stepping up. The Blue Jays have had many of the bottom order of the lineup producing, such as Myles Straw, Alan Roden, and Tyler Heineman. But the Blue Jays need their big bats to produce if they want a shot at making the postseason. This will allow the younger guys to add more insurance runs for the Blue Jays.
Why Barger Deserves More Playing Time
Barger also recorded a 112.5 mph double in game one of the doubleheader against the New York Yankees. In addition, a 93.2 mph average exit velocity this season also leads the team, and a 74 mph average bat speed that ranks him second. These are all positive signs coming from Barger and make him a valuable asset to the team. In his MLB career, he’s recorded 21 extra-base hits; this season, he’s recorded three. Barger has put in his time and has proven that he is a player who can add value.
If he continues to stay on track and contribute, he will grow to be an exciting player as the season progresses. With Daulton Varsho returning to the lineup on Tuesday, the Blue Jays will have another solid arm in the outfield. Both Varsho and Barger could do some severe damage with their rock-solid defense. Barger also possesses solid power, and if he remains on the roster, which he likely will, he will get the chance to belt some home runs. Last season for the Blue Jays, he smashed seven home runs. If Barger earns enough playing time, seeing him boost his stats from last season would be eventful.
