Blue Jays Prospect Jake Bloss to Undergo UCL Surgery on Elbow

May 14, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Blue Jays prospect Jake Bloss will miss the rest of 2025 after undergoing elbow surgery.

Jake Bloss, the Toronto Blue Jays’ No. 6 ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, will require season-ending surgery to repair the UCL in his right elbow. The 23-year-old right-hander was placed on the seven-day injured list on May 6th as he was experiencing elbow discomfort.

Before landing on the shelf, Bloss was sporting a 6.46 ERA across 23 2/3 innings pitched with Triple-A Buffalo. While he was off to a slow start this season, he would eventually have likely been a backup option in the Blue Jays starting rotation. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to make his highly anticipated MLB debut this season. It remains unknown whether he will have Tommy John surgery, a brace procedure, or a hybrid. Regardless, he will not return until 2026 at the earliest.

Blue Jays Pitching Prospect Jake Bloss to Have Season-Ending Elbow Surgery

Bloss is a highly touted prospect for the Blue Jays who showed promise during camp and in the Spring Breakout game this season. In that game, he pitched two solid innings and recorded four punchouts. He has been eyeing a spot in the 2025 Blue Jays rotation since last season. The Blue Jays have had bad luck when it comes to their pitching prospects. Ricky Tiedemann, Brandon Barriera, Alek Manoah, and Landen Maroudis have also undergone elbow surgery. The epidemic of elbow surgeries continues this season and it’s now digging deep into the youth level.

The Blue Jays have been known for having elite pitching prospects and their farm system is often undervalued. The long-term injury to Bloss is an unfortunate blow. Elbow surgeries among pitchers are becoming increasingly common at both the minor and major league levels. According to manager John Schneider, the specific factors regarding Bloss’s procedure and its timing are still being planned out.
