The Toronto Blue Jays will maintain some bullpen depth.
Shortly after Thursday’s game, the team announced that left-handed reliever Ryan Borucki had cleared waivers and had been assigned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Ahead of Monday’s game, the Blue Jays designated Borucki for assignment to call up Trey Yesavage, who dazzled in his big league debut. Although Borucki had the right to elect free agency if he cleared, it was reported by Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling that he preferred to remain with the Blue Jays.

On top of the Blue Jays being the team that drafted him all the way back in 2012, Borucki is still eligible for the postseason roster. This means that the Jays keep one of just a few left-handed pitchers who are eligible, while Borucki may have the opportunity to make his first postseason appearance since 2020.
This season, Borucki has a 4.63 ERA and 4.26 FIP in 35 innings pitched in 39 appearances. He’s spent most of the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, making just four appearances with the Blue Jays, where he hasn’t given up an earned run in four and a third innings of work.
Just three games are remaining in the Bisons’ season, so don’t expect the 31-year-old left-handed reliever to get much in-game action. That said, he’ll no doubt stay sharp as he’d likely be the first lefty reliever called up if one is needed in the postseason.
As it stands, Eric Lauer and Brendon Little are the two left-handed relievers currently on the Blue Jays’ 28-man roster. On their 40-man roster, Mason Fluharty has played a significant number of games for the Blue Jays this season, as has Justin Bruihl. Adam Macko and Easton Lucas are two options for the Blue Jays if they need bulk innings.
Time will tell if Borucki will pitch for the Blue Jays again. If he’s not on the 40-man roster by the end of the season, he has the opportunity to elect free agency, where he could get a better opportunity than the one presented by the Blue Jays at season’s end. Still, it’s good to have him remain in the organization as they maintain some depth.
