Blue Jays Season Boosted by Comeback Success

September 13, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The first-place Toronto Blue Jays have enjoyed a largely successful season so far, and their knack for comeback wins is no small reason. They lead MLB in comeback victories this season. Their 4-3 victory over the Houston Astros on Tuesday was their 43rd such win. The gravity of excitement was felt at the Rogers Centre.

Revamped Season

Even in the Blue Jays’ loss to the Astros on Wednesday, they were able to come back from a 2-0 deficit and tie the game. But unfortunately, closer Jeff Hoffman gave up a home run in the ninth inning. Toronto was unable to make a second comeback in the game and fell short 3-2. But their urgency and ability to come back in games has been remarkable and fun to watch.

Comeback Success Continues

Another memorable comeback victory for the Blue Jays this season was on August 15, when catcher Alejandro Kirk recorded his first stolen base in his career. Their comeback success this season represents their growth from the last few seasons.

The Blue Jays’ ability to bounce back in games comes through a combination of factors, including a noteworthy boost in offensive reliability with runners in scoring position, as well as more depth with a multifaceted lineup, and improved focus with base running and communication.

The team’s focus on putting the ball in play, an improved strikeout rate, and getting clutch hits from across the roster has been paramount to their ability to rally and achieve close victories.

Offensive Consistency

Toronto has transformed into a team that hits more for contact with a revamped strikeout rate, which helps them get on base and increase pitch counts.

Run-Scoring Ability

The offense has been able to score more runs, which has been significant in late-game situations. Their Blue Jays have showcased their ability to come back late in games.

Deeper Lineup

The Blue Jays have a deeper lineup where they can gain contributions from both the top and bottom of the lineup. Overall,  more hitters are capable of providing success in different ways, rather than simply leaning on power hitters.

Improved Culture & Communication

The dugout atmosphere has shown the players engaged, having fun, and exuding more positivity. There’s also been improved communication and a commitment to specific roles for hitters and pitchers.

Boosted Defense

The team’s defense has become a significant strength, which provides a solid foundation for comeback opportunities. Guys like Andres Gimenez, Myles Straw, and Addison Barger have been standouts in this area.

Empowered Pitching Staff

Pitchers are more confident to make adjustments, even if it means going against the norm, which helps them perform better in key moments.

Evidence of Success

The Blue Jays saw a big offensive improvement from the 2025 season, as reflected in advanced metrics like wOBA and wRC+.They have performed well with a higher batting average and more hits than in recent seasons, demonstrating their ability to get on base. All this is contributing to the Blue Jays ability to fight back and win games after trailing early.
