The Toronto Blue Jays added another layer of catching depth to the pipeline on Thursday.
According to the club’s transaction log, they’ve signed catcher/first baseman Geovanny Planchart to a minor-league deal for next season. The 24-year-old, a former prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ system, spent all last season at high-A and finished the year on the development list.
Planchart, a glove-first backstop, has reached as high as double-A in his professional career, but repeated the high-A level in 2o25 and struggled to find his footing at the plate. In 56 games, the right-handed-hitting catcher slashed .193/.307/.293 with just three home runs and 18 RBIs, accounting for a well-below-average 80 wRC+ (100 league average).

Despite Planchart’s overall ineffectiveness, drawing walks has been his brightest offensive tool, producing a double-digit walk rate at each affiliate he’s appeared at since 2021. Unfortunately, it’s largely been the only tool in his toolbox.
The Venezuela catcher displayed encouraging signs of power during his limited 12-game sample size in the Arizona Fall League during the 2024 campaign, posting a trio of extra-base hits while slugging .500. He also earned nine walks to just seven strikeouts in that span, further showcasing his quality swing decisions.
However, he was unable to capitalize on that success and parlay it into a productive development year with the Pirates organization a season ago. Once free agency opened on Nov. 6, the franchise approved his request to be granted free agency.
In addition to catching, which saw Planchart throw out over 40 per cent of baserunners in ’25, he’s expanded his defensive flexibility in recent seasons by playing first base, where he logged a career-high 121 innings last season.
When the 2026 minor-league season rolls around, Planchart will likely begin the year with the Vancouver Canadians, backing up top catching prospect Edward Duran.
