Blue Jays’ Trey Yesavage pitched his best start in Double-A

June 26, 2025 by Blue Jays Nation

Wednesday’s game was a great bounce-back performance for the Toronto Blue Jays’ top pitching prospect.

Trey Yesavage made his third Double-A start for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Wednesday evening, going five scoreless innings, striking out eight and walking just one batter to bring his ERA at the level to 3.86.

He generated a first-pitch ground ball out, which was followed by the Hartford Yard Goats’ only hit off Yesavage. He stranded the runner thanks to two strikeouts to end the first inning. The 21-year-old also struck out two players in the bottom of the second inning, one swinging and one looking.

Yesavage struck out just one batter in the bottom of the third, as Cole Carrigg was caught looking to end the third. Yesavage allowed his (and last) second base runner as Kyle Karros walked. The pitcher followed that up with a strikeout and a flyout to get out of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Yesavage struck out two before getting his final batter, Dyan Jorge, to fly out to end the inning.

Overall, Yesavage threw 75 pitches, 49 of which were strikes. The Jays’ top pitching prospect generated 16 whiffs on 36 swings, giving him a whiff rate of 44.4%. Yesavage threw 40 fastballs in total, averaging 94-95 in the first four innings, but his velocity decreased to 91-93 in the fourth and fifth innings. Interesting, one of the two times Yesavage reached 96 mph was in the bottom of the fourth.

Yesavage generated eight whiffs on 21 swings for a 38.1 whiff%. What’s odd is that only one of his eight whiffs had a velocity above 93 mph; seven of his eight whiffs were 93 mph or slower.

This was easily his best start, and a nice bounce-back game for the 21-year-old. Last time, Yesavage pitched just two and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts, three walks, and four earned runs allowed. In his first start on June 12, he went four innings with four strikeouts and walks and one earned run allowed.

If the rotation remains the same, Yesavage’s next start will be on Canada Day against the Portland Sea Dogs.
