Canadians Jonah Tong and Owen Caissie took the field at the MLB Futures Games

July 14, 2025 by Blue Jays Nation

Major League Baseball’s All-Star festivities are well underway, led off by the celebrity game and the intriguing Futures Game that took place on Saturday at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves.

This annual contest features MLB’s top prospects from around the league, giving a preliminary look at the next generation of the game. Each team sends at least one prospect, with the Blue Jays sending Trey Yesavage (who struck out the only batter he faced).

Two Canadians made an appearance in this year’s Futures Game; two very significant players from north of the border who should be in the big leagues in the near future. Right-handed pitcher Jonah Tong (New York Mets) and outfielder Owen Caissie (Chicago Cubs) represented the National League squad.

Tong and Caissie Both Took Action

Tong, one of two New York Mets prospects at the Futures Game, worked a three-up, three-down outing in the top of the second inning. He started with a strikeout, ending the at-bat with a sharp breaking pitch at 77 mph to cause chase and a swinging miss for Mariners prospect Harry Ford. Tong then forced a line out and a ground out to Josue Briceno and Sebastian Walcott, respectively.

The Mets hurler’s delivery looked very healthy, as it has all year, and he’s worked his fastball up to 97 mph. He also mixed in his curveball, which sat in the lower 80s/high 70s, slider, and his changeup, a pitch that he discussed with reporters over the weekend.

Cubs prospect Owen Caissie played the entire game and was one of the team’s best bats, reaching base three times. Although he didn’t hit a long ball, he produced a run with a double and also produced two walks. The Ontario product slotted into the three-hole in the National League batting order.

He hacked at an 82 mph off-speed pitch, going opposite field past the left-fielder, pushing a run across to give the NL a 4-2 lead.

Caissie is ranked the top prospect in the Cubs’ pipeline, and 43rd ranked among all MLB prospects. Tong is ranked the second top prospect in the Mets’ farm system, and 59th overall.

Both of these players began their careers in Ontario, between Baseball Ontario, the Canadian Premier Baseball League, the Canadian Futures Showcase (Tournament 12), and the Junior National Team. Both Caissie and Tong will continue their journey in advancing to the next level of their organizations.
