Could a Former Blue Jay Land with the Dodgers?

January 8, 2026 by Last Word On Baseball

It has been a calm off-season for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The defending World Series Champions roster has remained mostly intact. However, expectations are that they will make a splash or two before Spring Training begins next month. One of the possible names linked to the Dodgers is free-agent infielder Bo Bichette. The Toronto Blue Jays appear interested in spending their resources elsewhere, according to Mitch Bannon of the Athletic. This opens the door for the Dodgers. Will they go through it?

Los Angeles Dodgers and Bo Bichette are “in agreement” on a 5-year, $178M deal, with incentives that could push it close to $200M. PER JEFF PASSAN https://t.co/FK8MXB1B6Q pic.twitter.com/ipxHlgs36z

Year in review

The 27-year-old was once thought to be a main-stay in the Blue Jay infield. This year, however, his playing time was limited, due to a significant knee injury.  When he was healthy, he hit 18 home runs and carried a .311 batting average. Perhaps, more importantly, Bichette was on fire during the World Series. He had eight hits, including a three-run home run against Shohei Ohtani that looked for eight innings that it would be the decisive blow in a thrilling Game seven.

An Added Bonus

To sweeten the deal for the Dodgers, Bichette indicated that he would be willing to second base from shortstop. This could work out for the Dodgers since Gold-Glove finalist Mookie Betts resides in the six hole. Prior to Betts cementing his position at shortstop, Bichette’s name had come up as a possible solution for the Dodgers last winter.

Other Factors to Consider

As Los Angeles continues to weigh their options. Tommy Edman has to be in the back of their mind. Edman had off-season ankle surgery. Depending on the rate of his recovery, Edman might spend the majority of his playing time in center field, if deemed healthy. If not, Edman will probably play second base. and Bichette will be looking for playing time.

Needs versus Wants

It seems more likely that the Dodgers will work out a solution for a corner outfielder, before they spring for an infielder. Until then, the speculation continues.
