Padres 6 Blue Jays 7 (11 innings)
What an exciting set of extra innings.
Top of the 10th
Brendon Little is pitching Xander Bogaerts on second. Little got two quick outs but gave up a single, and the Padres were ahead. Little got Machado to ground out to end the inning.
Bottom of the 10th
Nathan Lukes at second. Jonatan Clase, who had a great day, singled Lukes home. After Springer flied out, Kirk came in to pinch-hit for Heineman and singled, Clase to season. But Bo struck out and Vlad popped out to right.
Top of the 11th
Machado at second, Little still in. Jackson Merrill flied out. But Gavin Sheets (him again??) singled in the go-ahead run. Jake Cronenworth lined out. Braydon Fisher came in and got Elias Diaz on a pop-up to center field.
Bottom of the 11th
Vlad on second. Daulton Varsho pulled one down the first baseline for a triple and a tie game. They walked Addison Barger. Clement hit a fly ball to the right, but it was not deep enough. But Nathan Lukes singled and the Jays win.
Bowden Francis didn’t look great today, but then only gave up the two runs on a Gavin Sheets home run. But he had a few deep flyouts. And he had a couple of runners on base in the fourth. So John took him out after four innings. I’m a bigger fan of trying to get a little more out of a starter.
Yariel Rodríguez came in for the fifth inning and struck out the side. And he got the first out of the sixth. He’s been so good lately,
Mason Fluharty came in for the lefties and got the last two outs of the sixth and the first out of the seventh. Then it was Chad Green’s turn. He got a fly out, gave up a single and was helped out by Tyler Heineman throwing out Jose Iglesias trying to steal second.
Yimi Garcis got the eighth. He gave up a two-out double by Luis Arraez, but got a pop out to end the inning.
Hoffman pitched the ninth, and our lead lasted only two batters, a walk, and Sheets’s second two-run homer of the game. Hoffman is worrying me. Fortunately, he didn’t let the Padres take the lead.
We didn’t score in the bottom of the ninth, so extra inning happened.
On offense, we got two in the third inning. Singles from Heineman and Bichette. An out later, Varsho reached on an error by Padres’ first baseman Gavin Sheets, and Addison Barger singled two home runs. Unfortunately, it ended there, with groundouts by Clement and Lukes.
And two more in the fourth. Clase walked. After a Straw flyout, Tyler Heineman singled. Then Bichette singled in Clase (I like Clase’s speed). Vlad hit by pitch, then Varsho hit a sac fly.
And then nothing until extras. we should have scored more.
We had 12 hits, and 7 walks, so should have added up to more. Barger had 3 hits. Bo, Clase, and Heineman each had 2. Barge, Lukes and Clase took 2 walks. Vlad, Clement and Straw had 0 fors.
Jays of the Day: Varsho (.619 WPA), Clase (.384) and Barger (.157). And I’m giving one to Rodríguez.
Other Award: Hoffman (-.298), Little (-.175, not really fair as he had a runner on second to start the inning), Vlad (-.199, on an 0 for 5 day), Clement (-.199, 0 for 5, walk), Straw (-.232, 0 for 4).
I didn’t expect a sweep, but I’m happy to be wrong. Maybe we could sweep the Rays, too.
Tomorrow the Jays are off to Tampa to play in a minor league park against the Rays.
