With the trade deadline approaching quickly, there is a lot of speculation about who the Jays could acquire and what they would have to give up.
For me, the big question is ‘Will the Jays trade either or both of Arjun Nimmala and Trey Yesavage?’
They are the big two names on the prospect list. After that, there is a pretty big drop. MLB Pipeline has Orelvis Martinez listed as our third-best prospect and Ricky Tiedemann in the fourth spot. What the Jays could get for the top two in trade is much, much different than what they could get for the second two.
I would hate to lose Nimmala or Yesavage. The latter could be part of our staff as soon as next year. Nimmala is further away, but could be what Bo has been for the team. And Yesavage could save us from having to sign another free-agent pitcher in his 30s for a lot of money. Signing Max Scherzer is fun and all, but having a cost-controlled pitcher would allow the team to spend in other areas.
Around this time of year, I read a bunch about how prospects rarely pan out. And then I look at our roster and think, ‘well, a lot of them do pan out’. But then, a top pitcher would improve our chances of making the playoffs. We aren’t going to get a top starter for Martinez.
I’m a fan of watching young players come up, and I’d like to watch Yesavage pitch for the Jays.
But I’d also like to see playoffs……
We’ll hear about Ryan Burr hitting the IL later today. I don’t know who is most likely to take his place.
It is a late game tonight, especially for you guys east of me. You better get a nap in.
I’m out for most of the day, use the thread to discuss anything that comes up.
