That series sucked.
On Sunday, the Toronto Blue Jays played the finale of their three-game series against the New York Mets, falling 2-1 to bring their season record to 5-5. Let’s take a look at what happened in this game (spoiler: it wasn’t a great day for the Jays).
Bowden Francis walked two of the first three batters he faced in the bottom of the third, and it cost the Blue Jays in the long run as Pete Alonso hit an RBI single, followed by Brandon Nimmo’s sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game.

The only Blue Jays run came in the top of the fifth. Tyler Heineman hit a lead-off double, and Mets starter David Peterson was clearly injured, walking Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Anthony Santander, before hitting Andrés Giménez with a pitch while the bases were loaded. Alejandro Kirk popped up, and the inning was over.
Takeaways…
The Blue Jays struggled with runners in scoring position in this game, going 0-8. In the top of the second, Alejandro Kirk hit a single and Ernie Clement walked to put runners on first and second with less than two outs. They didn’t score. In the top of the third, they had runners on first and second with two outs, then Andrés Giménez struck out. The top of the fifth saw the Jays score, but they could’ve had more.
That was a problem the entirety of the series against the Mets. On Friday, they were 0-3 and failed to score a run, and they were 2-10 on Saturday, finishing the series 2-21. That’s not nearly good enough, especially given that pitching was solid in the series.
Bowden Francis had a solid game, giving up six hits, two earned runs (due to the two walks), and striking out six to give him a 3.18 ERA for the season. Chad Green pitched an inning and two-thirds of solid work, while Brendon Little had a good bounce-back game, striking out two in an inning of work.
The same cannot be said for the hitters. Alejandro Kirk had two of the Blue Jays’ four hits while Tyler Heineman and Myles Straw had the other two hits. Ernie Clement and Anthony Santander had two walks each. The Jays need to start hitting home runs soon.
And they’ll get an opportunity to do so in their next series, as they head to the hitters-friendly Fenway Park for a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox starting Monday. That game starts at 6:45 PM ET with José Berríos expected to start for the Jays.
