Instant Reaction: Blue Jays come from behind for the 19th time in 5-4 win over Twins

June 8, 2025 by Blue Jays Nation

The Toronto Blue Jays cannot be stopped.

On Saturday afternoon, the Blue Jays defeated the Minnesota Twins 5-4 to move to a season-high six games over .500, a 35-29 record. Let’s take a look at what happened in this one!

With runners on first and second, Nathan Lukes hit a two-out single on a 1-2 count to drive in the first Blue Jays’ run of the game. They extended the lead to 2-0, as Tyler Heineman hit his career-best second home run of the season.

Kevin Gausman ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with one out. He hit a batter and walked a batter to tie the game up at two. In the bottom of the sixth, Matt Wallner hit a solo home run to give the Twins a 3-2 lead.

Down to six outs left, Addison Barger hit a lead-off double in the top of the eighth. The next batter up was George Springer, who hit his 10th home run of the season to give the Jays a 4-3 lead. In the top of the ninth, Heineman hit a single and was driven in by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to extend the Jays’ lead.

That extra run helped the Jays, as Kody Clemens, son of former Blue Jay Roger Clemens, hit a solo home run to bring the Twins to within one run. Thankfully, Jeff Hoffman got the final three outs.

Takeaways…

It’s safe to say that this is the best the Blue Jays have been all season. They’ve now won 10 of their last 12 games, including a 9-1 record in their last 10. With Saturday’s win, they are a season-high six games over .500 in the first Wild Card spot and just five games behind the New York Yankees. Moreover, the Jays have won their last four series.

This was another come-from-behind win for the Blue Jays, their 19th of the season, which is the second-most in the league. According to The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon, the Jays had 25 all of last season.

The Blue Jays scored their fifth run off Jhoan Duran, who came into this game giving up just three earned runs in 28.1 innings for a 0.95 ERA. After the game, his ERA jumped to 1.23.

George Springer hit the home run that gave the Blue Jays a lead in the top of the eighth, and to say he’s been one of the best hitters for the Jays would be an understatement. After this game, the 35-year-old is slashing .251/.367/.487 with a team-leading 10 home runs in 232 plate appearances. Who saw this coming?

Tyler Heineman is the best backup catcher in the league. After hitting a home run and two singles, the 33-year-old switch-hitter is slashing .429/.441/.625 with two home runs in 59 plate appearances for a 204 wRC+. On top of his production with the bat, Heineman has 5 Defensive Runs Saved in 136.2 innings behind home plate.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Nathan Lukes each had two-hit games, while Addison Barger hit his 12th double of the season. Andres Gimenez now has at least one hit in eight of his last nine games.

It wasn’t Kevin Gausman’s best start of the year, giving up three earned runs and striking out five in six innings of work. That said, he now has three quality starts in his last four outings. Chad Green was the pitcher of record, loading the bases but getting out of it without giving up a run.

Braydon Fisher pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout for his first career hold. Coming out of the bullpen, he hasn’t given up an earned run in 10.1 innings and has a 0.18 FIP in that span. The only runs he’s given up this season came in his only start, giving up five in an inning and a third.

Jeff Hoffman got the final three outs, giving up a home run in the process to give him a 5.65 ERA for the season. The good news is that he still picked up the save, his 15th of the season.

The Jays will look for their second sweep in their last three series, as they play the Twins on Sunday at 2:10 PM ET. Bowden Francis looks to have a better start than his last outing.
