Instant Reaction: Blue Jays mounted a late comeback to defeat Yankees 4-2

April 26, 2025 by Blue Jays Nation

The losing streak is over.

On Friday evening, the Toronto Blue Jays snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating the New York Yankees 4-2 in comeback fashion to move to 13-13 for the season. Let’s take a look at what happened in this game!

The Blue Jays hit their 14th home run of the season in the top of the sixth, and it was from the top of the lineup as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his second home run of the season to put them up 1-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Oswaldo Cabrera hit an RBI single to tie the game up at one. With Mason Fluharty on the mound in the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees loaded the bases, and Austin Wells hit a sacrifice fly to give the Bronx Bombers the lead.

However, the Blue Jays finally showed some fight for the first time in a while. George Springer hit a lead-off single, and Andrés Giménez was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Enter Alejandro Kirk, who hit a clutch double to put the Blue Jays up 3-2. The Jays added a run thanks to Addison Barger’s single, making it a 4-2 game. That’s all Jeff Hoffman needed to close the game out.

Takeaways…

In the three-game series against the Houston Astros earlier this week, the Blue Jays mustered nine hits for an average of three hits per game. In this game against the Yankees alone, the Jays had nine hits. They also had three extra-base hits, as many as they did in the previous series.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his second home run of the season to break the 0-0 deadlock. The Jays eventually lost that lead, but regained it thanks to the clutch top of the ninth. Either way, this is a good sign.

Alejandro Kirk had a good game. On top of a single, he hit the massive go-ahead double to drive in the game-tying and go-ahead run. Getting him going as well would be nice. He was one of three Blue Jays who had a multi-hit game, as Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes each had two hits.

José Berríos had a good start, pitching five and one-third innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed seven baserunners (five hits, two walks), but struck out four to bring his season ERA to 4.24. Brendon Little gave up an earned run in his inning and a third of work.

Yimi García was taken out too early for the lefty-on-lefty matchup, as Mason Fluharty gave up the run that put the Yankees up 2-1. Still, the rookie’s ERA sits at a respectable 3.12. Jeff Hoffman, as you could guess, was nails to pick up his sixth save of the season.

The Jays have a chance to win the series on Saturday, as Kevin Gausman faces Max Fried in a battle of the aces. That game starts at 1:05 PM ET.
