Instant Reaction: Blue Jays’ offence goes cold in 8-0 loss to Phillies

June 14, 2025 by Blue Jays Nation

The Toronto Blue Jays were due for a bad game.

On Friday evening, they opened their series against the Philadelphia Phillies, falling 8-0 to snap their three-game winning streak. Let’s take a look at this one.

The Phillies opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Brandon Marsh hit an RBI double to score the game-winning run, and Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run blast to give them a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Otto Kemp hit an RBI single to make it a 5-0 game. The Phillies had another big inning in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs.  J.T. Realmuto drove in a runner with a double, Marsh hit a sacrifice fly, and Trea Turner hit an RBI single for the 8-0 win.

Takeaways…

You can’t win them all. With this loss, the Blue Jays moved to 13-4 in their last 17 games. The Jays will now need to win the next two games over the weekend to win their sixth consecutive series.

A large reason they lost this game is because Ranger Suarez shut their offence down, going seven innings with four hits allowed and six strikeouts. This was the fifth time the Blue Jays were shut out this season and the first time since May 27.

Alejandro Kirk had another multi-hit game, hitting two singles. Ernie Clement, Davis Schneider, and Addison Barger had the other three hits. Schneider also drew one of two walks, with Andres Gimenez also getting on base thanks to a walk.

It was a tough game for Kevin Gausman, going five innings with four earned runs, four hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts. His season ERA now sits at 4.08. Mason Fluharty came into the game in the bottom of the sixth, giving up a run to bring his season ERA to 3.99.

Braydon Fisher continues to dominate in relief, throwing a clean inning with two strikeouts. He’s now pitched 14 innings in relief and hasn’t allowed a run, with a K% over 40%. Erik Swanson didn’t find the same success in the bottom of the eighth, going an inning with three earned runs against.

For the first time since May 25, the Blue Jays weren’t able to win a game that Bowden Francis didn’t start in. The right-handed pitcher will start Saturday afternoon, with that game starting at 4:05 PM ET.
