The Toronto Blue Jays entered Fenway Park looking to keep their winning ways on the road intact and walked away the victors, pummeling the Red Sox by a score of 9-0. It was an impressive day at the plate and on the mound for Toronto, with Jose Berrios getting the nod to make his second start in Boston this season.
Berrios would go seven innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out eight, converting a 71.2% strike rate. The right-hander generated 14 swings and misses on the evening, and six of his punchouts were via the swinging strikeout. His slurve was working well, generating 10 of those whiffs on 32 total pitches.
Following Berrios were Nick Sandlin and Paxton Schultz, taking the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Sandlin struggled with his command out of the gate, walking the first batter before getting out of the inning via a pop-up and a double play. Schultz, who was making his first-ever appearance at Fenway, pulled off the ‘in-play tri-fecta’ by generating a flyout, a pop-up, and a groundout to get out of the inning. Collectively, the Jays’ pitching staff generated three double plays.

At the plate, the Blue Jays’ bats came alive to the tune of 16 hits and eight walks. Shockingly, free-swinging Ernie Clement led the team with his three free passes against Brayan Bello and the Red Sox pitching staff while Alejandro Kirk chipped in two more.
George Springer and Andres Gimenez led the way with three hits apiece, with Springer turning in three RBIs as well, with Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Kirk, and Clement also finding the multi-hit column. Addison Barger chipped in a double, his lone hit of the day, as well as Alan Roden, who took over for Guerrero Jr. late in the game. Nathan Lukes and Jonatan Clase both went hitless at the plate, while Clase and Barger were the lone Jays bats to strike out.
The Jays’ bats got to the Red Sox early, scoring in the first three innings to get ahead 3-0 heading into the top of the fourth. They didn’t put anything on the board again until the seventh and eighth innings, generating six more runs off of relievers Luis Guerrero and Brennan Bernardino, with Bernardino allowing four walks and being credited for four earned runs. Boston ended up using a position player to close out of the ninth inning, with Nate Eaton putting up a clean inning.
Toronto will look to win the series later this afternoon, with Chris Bassitt facing Lucas Giolito in the afternoon matchup. There is some potential weather moving into the area at the time, so there may be a delay or potential cancellation in the cards.
