The vibes of the Toronto Blue Jays are much better in 2025.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Blue Jays defeated the Nationals 4-2 to bring their season record to 5-2. It was also their first sweep of the season. Let’s take a look at what happened in the game!
In the bottom of the first inning, Andrés Giménez drove in Anthony Santander with an RBI single to put the Jays on the board.

In the bottom of the fourth, George Springer hit his first home run of the season to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. The game-winning run was scored in the bottom of the fifth as Ernie Clement hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded (he just missed a home run).

After the Nationals scored thanks to a home run in the top of the sixth, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made contact on a hit-and-run play, causing a run to come in and Guerrero Jr. to advance to second base. The Nationals scored another run in the top of the ninth, but they were unable to score the game-tying run despite having the go-ahead run at the plate.

Takeaways…
Easton Lucas made the start, and it won’t be his only start. It was the left-handed pitchers’ first career start in the big leagues, throwing five scoreless innings with one hit allowed, two walks, and three strikeouts. Hopefully, his next start goes as well.
It’s only been seven games, but I’m so close to announcing that George Springer is so back. He hit his first home run of the season and is slashing .429/.520/.667 through his first 25 plate appearances. Hopefully, he can keep it up as the Blue Jays hit the road.
Myles Straw had a terrific game, going 3-4 with two doubles and a single in this game. Who saw that coming? Tyler Heineman also had a solid game, hitting two singles in his four plate appearances and even throwing out a runner to end the game. Good stuff from the bottom of the lineup.
Anthony Santander still hasn’t hit a home run, but he hit his 700th MLB hit and also had a double and a single. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also had a double in this game, his third of the season.
Last season, the Blue Jays were three games over .500 on Apr. 22, the most number of games over that mark they achieved in 2024. Well, they’ve already matched that seven games into the season and are just one game shy of matching their 2024 season-high win streak. Their first sweep of last season came in late May.
Up next is a matchup against the New York Mets on Friday at 3:10 PM ET. Kevin Gausman is expected to make his second start of the season.
