Well, that wasn’t a great game for the Toronto Blue Jays.
On Sunday evening, they played the series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays, falling 13-0 to move their season record to 25-27. Let’s take a look at what happened in this one.
The game was over in the bottom of the first, as Brandon Lowe hit a two-run home run off Chris Bassitt, putting the Jays in an early hole. This was Lowe’s fourth home run against the Jays in just six games.

Toronto was still “in” the game when the bottom of the fifth started, but that changed quickly. Junior Caminero hit an RBI double to make it 3-0. A fielder’s choice scored another Rays’ run. Chandler Simpson hit an RBI single, Kameron Misner walked with the bases loaded, Ben Rortvedt hit a two-RBI single, and Yandy Diaz hit a double to cap off a seven-run inning to make it 9-0.
But wait, there’s more! In the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third, Rortvedt grounded out for the first out, but drove in the tenth Rays’ run. That runner on third came in to score when Diaz grounded out, before Curtis Mead hit a two-run blast to make it 13-0.
Takeaways…
What can you take away from this game and the previous 51 games, other than this team just isn’t consistent enough? At certain points, the offence has looked great, but the pitching has struggled. Other times it’s been vice versa, but Sunday’s game saw both the pitching and offence struggle.
Throughout the series, the Jays scored just two runs, and unless the team got insane pitching, there’s just no way of winning. Their pitching wasn’t even that bad in their first two games, allowing just three runs in each game.
This game saw the Blue Jays register four hits, getting singles from Michael Stefanic, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Jonatan Clase, and Ali Sanchez.
If you were to take a bright spot from this game, it’s that the Jays only used three pitchers in the blowout. Chris Bassitt went four innings and pitched into the fifth, giving up five earned runs to bring his season ERA to 3.38.
Mason Fluharty had a rough game, allowing two of Bassitt’s base runners to come in and giving up four earned runs to rocket his ERA to 3.86. Paxton Schultz gave up four runs in three innings, but all of them were unearned. Michael Stefanic pitched the bottom of the eighth for the Jays, getting a line out, a fly out, and a pop out.
The Jays head to Arlington to face the Texas Rangers, starting a three-game series against their bitter rivals on Monday at 4:05 PM ET. Kevin Gausman is expected to start against Jacob deGrom.
