There’s a newcomer to the top prospect lists.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.
The prospect we’ll look at in this article is a 2023 draftee, Jackson Hornung. If you missed the last article, we looked at pitcher Nolan Perry.
Getting to know Jackson Hornung…
Position: Outfielder/First baseman
Bats: Right
Born: February 6, 2001
Acquired: 16th round, 2023 draft
Previous ranking: Not ranked
Hornung was drafted out of Skidmore College, an NCAA Division III school, in the latter rounds of the 2023 draft. Starting his professional career as a catcher, Hornung slashed .143/.210/.232 with one home run in 62 plate appearances with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays to end the 2023 season.
The 2024 season saw the 24-year-old spend the entirety of the year with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, where he slashed .258/.341/.373 with six home runs in 463 plate appearances for a 107 wRC+. Hornung still spent a large portion of his season behind the dish, but that changed in 2025.
And it was a change for the better. Hornung has played the 2025 season at first base and left field, and his bat has benefited greatly. Starting the season with the Canadians, Hornung slashed .308/.396/.459 with three home runs in 189 plate appearances, with a 12.2 BB% and 27 K% for a 136 wRC+.
The jump from High-A to Double-A is a tough one, but Hornung has already found success with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, as he’s slashing .296/.366/.480 with four home runs in 144 plate appearances for 145 wRC+.
There isn’t a ton of pop in his bat, but he’s shown off a decent hit tool, albeit with some swing and miss. Defensively, he’s solid in the outfield and should be able to stick in left field. The next step for Hornung is to continue to do what he’s doing and have a good start to 2026, as he could be with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons rather quickly if he finds success.
