Blue Jays 9 Red Sox 0
For the second day in a row, we have had a great game from our starting pitcher. José Berríos went seven innings, allowed four hits, one walk, and had eight strikeouts. He came out of the game at 91 pitches. I thought that perhaps he’d get to start the eighth, but, as mentioned on the telecast, the team doesn’t have any off-days for a bit, so everyone is going to be on regular rotation, might as well not push José.
On the offensive side, we got a run in each of the first three innings. It would have been nice to put up a crooked number in one of those innings and make it a laugher early, but such is life.
- In the first, Vladimir Guerrero got a two-out single and stole second. I’d rather he not do that, but he doesn’t always listen to me. Alejandro Kirk walked. George Springer singled to center. Great throw from Ceddanne Rafaela. The home plate umpire called Vlad out, but replays showed that Vlad avoided the tag. More runs would have been nice, but never complain about a first-inning run.
- In the second, Ernie Clement walked, and Andrés Giménez singled to start the inning. An out later, Bo Bichette singled home Clement. Again, two out, one out, it would have been nice to score more.
- In the third, Springer had a one-out single and stole second. After a Nathan Lukes fly out, Clement singled home Springer.
That would be all our scoring until the seventh. I was worried that not adding on might cost us, but….
- We got two in the seventh: Addison Barget hammered a double (111.0 mph) to start it off. Vlad walked. Kirk doubled in one. After a pair of groundouts, the Red Sox intentionally walked Clement (lefty on the mound) to load the bases and pitch to Giménez. He got an RBI walk on five pitches.
- And four in the eighth: With one out, Barger walked, Vlad singled, and Kirk walked to load the bases. Springer singled in one. Myles Straw, pinch-hitting, had a sac fly. Clement singled to reload the bases. Giménez singled home two.
9-0 with an inning and a half left.
Almost everyone was hitting tonight. We had 16 hits. Giménez and Springer had three. Bichette, Vlad, Kirk, and Clement (with 3 walks!) had 2. Lukes and Clase had the 0 fors.
Vlad didn’t show any ill effects from yesterday’s hit by pitch. He had a 112.9 mph single, the hardest hit of the day.
Bo and Alan Roden had hits against Nate Eaton (an infielder) in the ninth.
We only had two extra base hits, both doubles.
Nick Sandlin and Paxton Schultz pitched the eighth and ninth.
Jays of the Day: Berríos (.353), Clement (.132) and Springer (.100).
Other Award: Jonatan Clase (-.109 with a 0 for 5).
Tomorrow we have a 4:00 Eastern start. Chris Bassitt (7-3, 3.61) vs. Lucas Giolito (3-1, 4.53).
