Jays Defeat Evil

Yankees 4 Blue Jays 5

That was an exciting game—lots of debatable moves, lots of good defense, bad defense (mainly by the Yankees).

Max Scherzer looked excellent. He went five innings, gave up two runs on a Jazz Chisholm home run (after striking out Aaron Judge on ten pitches). He didn’t allow a walk and had seven strikeouts. There was a moment in that fifth inning where it looked like Scherzer had some discomfort of some sort (sounds like his thumb again). I hope he’s ok and will make his next start.

The Jays didn’t do a lot on offense. They got:

  • One in the fifth: Ernie Clement singled off Chisholm’s glove at third (Clement would have made that play). A ground out moved him to second, and a wild pitch moved him to third. He scored on a Vladimir Guerrero groundout.
  • Four in the sixth: Davis Schneider (much maligned (by me)) started things off with a double. Myles Straw grounded one to deep short. Anthony Volpe tried to get Schneider going for third, but threw a wild pitch, allowing Straw to reach second. Yankees’ catcher J.C. Escarra missplayed the ball when it went past third base, but Schneider had already stopped at third. Nathan Lukes singled through the infield, Scheider scored, and Straw to third. Will Wagner struck out (tough spot for a lefty batter vs a good lefthanded pitch in Carlos Rodón. A wild pitch moved Lukes to second. George Springer reached on catcher interference (yet again, he’s got the knack for that). And Vlad crushed a single to left (115.7 mph). Springer was out at third base, and he crashed, head first, into Chisholm’s leg. He left the game after that. Alejandro Kirk ground out to end the inning. 5-3 Jays.

The Jays had ten hits, but only two extra base hits (Vlad and Davis had doubles). Clement, Vlad and Schneider had two each. Springer (who walked and had the catcher’s interference), Kirk (with a walk) and Barger had 0 fors.

I was grumpy in the seventh. Schneider was on first, and John had Myles Straw hit and run, but Straw is all swing and miss, and well, he did, and Schneider was caught stealing. Straw was a poor choice to be the hit part of a hit and run (I’ll admit, I hate the hit and run). I guess the team hasn’t been hitting homers, so John thought he should manufacture a run.

We got four innings of two-run ball from our bullpen:

  • Brendon Little gave up a run on two hits and a walk in his inning.
  • Braydon Fisher (Brendon/Braydon….there is a lot of spelling to remember for a blogger of very little brain), got three strikeouts, around a walk, in his inning of work.
  • Mason Fluharty gave up a solo homer and an intentional walk to Judge (his second of the game), getting just one out.
  • Chad Green got the last two outs of the eighth on fly balls that Straw made nice catches on.
  • Jeff Hoffman gave up a hit but got his 19th save of the season. Very nice job by Hoffman.

Jays of the Day: Green (.166 WPA), Hoffman (.157), Clement (.153, 2 for 5), Lukes (.158, 1 for 2), Vlad (2 for 4, 3 RBI), Straw (.122, 1 for 3, 1 walk, plus the two catches), and Davis Schneider (.090, 2 for 3).

Other Award: Fluharty (-.165), Wagner (-.134, 1 for 4, 2 k), and Barger (-.096, 0 for 4).

Tomorrow is Canada Day, so we’ll get the big flag and a day game, 3:00 Eastern. Kevin Gausman (6-6, 4.21) coming off a great start (8 innings, 2 hits) vs Max Fried (10-2 1.92). Another lefty. I hope Bo and Springer can play.

They are saying that Springer hit his neck on Chisholm’s leg and had a hard time breathing. I think he should be okay tomorrow.

And they said that Bo stood on a bad, which caused his knee pain. I think it is less likely he’ll play tomorrow.
