Jays lose to Nationals

When Angel Hernandez retires I’m ging to have a big party.

Blue Jays 6 Nationals 12

How many times have we seen a game change on a bad call by an umpire? How about two bad calls? Maybe 20? Angel Hernandez was, well, Angel Hernandez tonight.

Third inning, 3-1 game with the Nationals in front, Juan Soto up:

The Nationals would end up scoring four more after that,

And then the top of the eighth, Jays working their way back into the game. They have scored three runs and have 2 on. Bo Bichette is the go-ahead run at the plate:

Strike one is high, strike two is outside. Bo grounds out.

When we get robo umps, I’m going to call them Angels in Hernandez’s honor.

Anyway….

Alek Manoah wasn’t sharp. He wasn’t helped by the umpire, but also he wasn’t sharp.

He ended up going just 3 innings, allowing 6 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned (the one unearned run was on a wild pick-off throw Manoah made), 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts. He wasn’t good, but he could have used some decent calls from Angel.

We used 5 relievers:

  • Trent Thornton gave up a solo home run.
  • Kirby Snead pitched a clean inning.
  • Conner Overton gave us 2 scoreless innings, allowing just one baserunner, on a hit batter.
  • Tayler Saucedo had a tough time, giving up a hit and two walks to load the bases, with just one out, bringing in Rafael Dolis.
  • Dolis got to three balls and then gave up a deep sac fly. A double scored two more and effectively ended things. A single scored another. Dolis was just off a good stretch, but he’s totally lost now. I don’t know what’s going on.

Offensively, we got a lot of base runners against starter Erick Fedde, but not enough runs. Fedde went 5 innings, allowed 5 hits, 3 earned 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Should have been more runs.

We got a run in the third and a Teoscar two-run homer in the fifth.

And 3 in the eighth. Teoscar singled, Corey Dickerson and Randal walked. Santiago Espinal hit into what looked like a double play, but a bobble turned it into just a force at second, with a run scoring. Reese McGuire reached on an error, scoring one. Alejandro Kirk, pinch-hitting, singled in another.

But Marcus Semien popped out. And Bo was Angeled.

In total, we had 10 hits. Bo, Vlad, and Teo had 2 each. Vlad had 2 walks as well. Semien was the only Jay started not to reach base.

Jays of the Day: McGuire had the number (.132) but most of that was because of the error. Let’s give one to Teoscar for his 2 for 4, with a walk, night.

Suckage: Manoah (-.403), some of that was on Angel, but he wasn’t good. And Semien had a tough day, 0 for 5 (including the popout in the eighth), for a -.181. And I’ll give one to Dolis too (-.035), but was just frustrating.

Tomorrow it is Jose Berrios, coming off his first poor start for the Jays. Josiah Gray gets the start for the Nationals. Gray is 0-1 with a 4.13 ERA in 4 starts.
