Jays 3 Padres 6
This is just a placeholder until I get to my computer. I was supposed to play squash but got stood up, so I had to watch the end of the game in the bar.
The Padres scored in weird ways:
Springer overran a Manny Machado single, allowing a run to score from first.
Twice bases-loaded walks brought in a Padres run. Trevor Richards and Nate Pearson had little idea of the strike zone.
A run scored on bases-loaded Catcher’s Interference.
A Xander Boegaerts homer gave the Padres a more normal run.
The Jays scored on solo homers from Ernie Clement and Davis Schneider, and we got another on a Daulton Varsho ground-rule double.
We only had 6 hits. Bo had 2, but what I’ll remember about his day is him getting a very good jump on a base steal, such a good jump that the pitcher hadn’t started his motion and was easily caught. Sometimes, it seemed like our batters just wanted to get their at-bats over with as quick as they could.
Chris Bassitt wasn’t great—5.1 innings, 2 earned runs, and 2 unearned runs. He did pick Profar off second base in a big moment.
Trevor Richards was bad, and Mate Pearson was worse.
All our pitchers walked 9, 3 each, which was very democratic.
Jay of the Day: Varsho has the number .102 WPA.
The Other Award: Richards (-.181, allowing both inherited runners to score), Vlad (-.119, for an 0 for 4 with a k) and Jansen (-.096 for an 0 or 3, and you could add in something for the catcher’s interference). And let’s give one to Springer for his -.025 plus the error in right allowing the first Padres’ run to score.
This might have helped cause the crappy play:
Chris Bassitt said about 20 members of the Blue Jays are battling a sinus infection right now and he’s one of them. Said he tried to fight through it today but just didn’t have it.
