Blue Jays 2 Royals 3
Our team keeps games so close so that if they aren’t perfect defensively, we lose.
We should have scored more than two runs.
But then we only had 6 hits and 3 walks.
George Springer had 2 of the hits, a double, and a solo homer in the fifth that got us our first run.
Our other run came in the sixth. Daulton Varsho started it off with a single, Danny Jansen walked. A wild pitch moved them to second and third. And an Ernie Clement ground out made it 3-2 Royals, which, unfortunately, is how it ended. Unfortunately, we only got one more hit, a one-out single in the ninth.
Yariel Rodríguez wasn’t as terrific as he was in his first two starts (expecting him to be amazing every start is hoping too much). He gave up 2 walks and a single in the first to allow the Royals’ first run.
In the second, there was a two-out fly ball that Addison Barger came in on, and it ended up over his head for a double. A single to left scored the run, and the Royals were up 2-0.
In the fifth, Yariel allowed three singles, with no outs, to score their final run of the game. Génesis Cabrera came in and stranded the other two runners (terrific job).
Bowden Francis threw two scoreless innings, and Trevor Richards threw one more scoreless.
The Jays were 0 for 7 with RISP, a stat that should lose you a game.
We had 0 fors from Bo, Vogelbach, Clement, Barger (who hit the ball hard once, 105.3 mph fly out) and Biggio.
Jays of the Day: Varsho (.142 WPA), Francis (.099), and Cabrera (.092).
The Other Award: Rodriguez (-.183, some of that because of the non-catch by Barger), Vogelbach (-.221), Biggio (-.200), Barger (-.173, plus not making that catch) and Bichette (-.129).
Tomorrow, we have a day game at 2:00 Eastern start. Jose Berrios (4-0, 0.85) vs. lefty Cole Ragans (0-2, 4.32).
