White Sox 7 Blue Jays 0 1
Well, the good part was that this one was over early, and we didn’t have to get invested in it.
Spencer Turnbull had nothing. He gave up a solo homer in the first. In the second inning he gave up a one-out triple, then got a strikeout. Then there were two singles, a walk and another single. Being fair, two of those three singles were very softly hit, just to the right spot. And that triple was a ball that Jonatan Clase maybe should have caught (add in that Addison Barger, backing up the play, booted the ball, turning it into a triple when it could have been a double. We were down 3-0. Turnbull walked the first batter in the third, and was pulled from the game.
There was some bad luck, but I don’t see what the Jays think they have in Turnbull. I’d be happy if they DFAed him. Or they could ask him if he would go back to the minors. But, if the team stays in the race for a playoff spot, they can’t afford to have Turnbull taking any more starts.
Mason Fluharty came in with the runner on first and gave up a home run, making it 5-0 and giving Turnbull his fourth earned run. Two walks and a double later, it was 7-0. Three earned and one inning pitched for Fluharty. He hasn’t looked great in his last few outings.
Braydon Fisher (two innings), Nick Sandlin, Chad Green, Brendon Little and Jeff Hoffman (he hasn’t pitched much lately) all put up zeros.
On offence, we did little—seven hits, with Bo Bichette getting three of those hits, and Ernie Clement had two. We got a run in the eighth. Tyler Heineman took a one-out walk. He tagged up to second, on a Jonatan Clase popup (just 202 feet), just beating out the throw. I thought the Sox might challenge the call, but it didn’t matter that much up seven. Of course, tagging from first to second isn’t a great move up seven. But a Bichette single scored him.
The outfield defense wasn’t great. Clase made a bad effort on that triple. And Barger booted the ball on that play. Lukes missed a catch on a fly ball that he went back for very nicely, but the ball missed his glove—one of those catches that has to be made.
No Jays of the Day.
Other Award: Turnbull (-.231 WPA) and Fluharty (-.135).
Tomorrow, Jose Berrios (2-3, 3.81) faces Aaron Civale (1-3, 4.67).
Losses happen, even against poor teams, but they’d better get the win tomorrow.
