The search for a fifth starter continues. The Jays signed Spencer Turnbull and José Ureña to major league contracts.
Turnball is 32. He pitched in 17 games with the Phillies last year, with a 2.65 ERA in 54.1 innings. Batters hit .188/.279/.325 (which makes you wonder why he was unsigned this season).
He’s pitched six seasons in the majors with a 4.36 ERA in 78 games, 67 starts. He throws many pitches: Four-seamer (averaging 92.9 mph), slider, sinker, changeup and curve.
Ureña is 33. He’s pitched 11 seasons in the majors, 233 games, 152 starts with a 4.80 ERA. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts (18.4% career). He does get a lot of ground balls (48.3% career).
He has the sinker, slider, change and four-seamer (96.4 mph average).
Last year, he pitched 3 innings for the Mets. In 2024, he pitched in 33 games, 9 starts, with the Rangers, and had a 3.80 ERA.
Both are pending physicals.
There will have to be a roster move to make room on the 40-man roster for them.
I’m pretty sure this isn’t the best way to make friends with the umpires, but this is funny:
Umpire CB Bucknor missed 11 calls in the first 4 innings and 9 went against the Blue Jays.
In response, Max Scherzer gave his best CB Bucknor impression. pic.twitter.com/TKEnhXkocy
