I’ll admit, going into the ninth inning, I didn’t think we would win this one. Shelby Miller coming into the game with a 1.57 ERA.
Then Davis Schneider struck out without swinging at a pitch. But then Bo Bichette, down 1-2 lined a pitch at the bottom of the zone, 108.3 mph, 399 feet. I thought we were going to extras. Then Addison Bargers, also with two strikeouts, hit a fly 408 feet to right field, leading to great celebrations. I think Barger likes batting second.
Before that, in the bottom of the seventh, we were down 4-2, Bo had a one-out double and Vlad drove him home with a single.
We had a run in the first. Barger doubled, and Vlad followed with a double. We had one in the third. Vlad crushed a home run, 112.1 mph, 448 feet to left center. Lourdes Gurriel didn’t even move.
We could have scored more. The bases were loaded in the fourth on a hit batter (Andrés Giménez), a walk (Will Robertson) and a hit batter (Jonatan Clase, and it looked like it hurt). But Bo hit a soft flyout.
We had nine hits. Vlad had three (single, double, home run, with three RBI). Bichette and Barger had two each (with the home runs in the ninth).
Getting 0 fors were Kirk, Giménez, and Robertson (with a walk). And the ninth spot in the order, Clase (who came out with an injury and Schneider went 0 for 3, thought Schneider was robbed by center fielder Alek Thomas, who made a fantastic catch at the wall in center. Ernie Clement was also robbed by second baseman Ketel Marte, who made an excellent backhanded catch while running out to center. That was as good a catch as you’ll ever see.
Chris Bassitt was pretty good, considering the number of lefties the D-Backs had in the lineup. He went six innings, allowing six hits, one walk, and five strikeouts.
Brendon Little had a rough time, getting two outs in the seventh but walking two. Braydon Fisher took over and gave up an RBI single, putting the Jays down 4-2.
Mason Fluharty worked his way through the eight, give up a hit and a walk.
Jeff Hoffman pitched the ninth, allowing just a walk, getting the win.
We had two players come out of the game with injuries. Jonatan Clase was hit in the knee with a pitch and came out of the game with a knee contusion. And Myles Straw made a rather awkward attempt at a catch at the wall in center. He left the game with an ankle sprain. I’m guessing he’ll miss some time, but we’ll likely find out in the morning. Clase? Well, we’ll find out tomorrow too. Maybe we’ll see Joey Loperfido (like we need another lefty outfielder).
This is cool:
