Blue Jays 2 Red Sox 1 (11 innings)
Another great start for our Jays. Kevin Gausman was terrific. He had an unearned run in the first. Jarren Duran singled to start the game (I thought Nathan Lukes should have caught it). Duran went to steal second, and Alejandro Kirk’s throw was wide and high of second, giving Duran third. A one-out sac fly scored him.
We got a run in the top of the first, and we likely should have had more. Vladimir Guerrero, Anthony Santander and Andrés Giménez had one-out singles. Vlad’s should have been an error; Alex Bregman bounced it to first. Will Wagner ground out to first to score the run. Kirk hit a hard fly to center (102.7 mph) but into the center fielder’s glove.
After the first, the pitchers took over.
Tanner Houck went 6.2 innings, allowing just 5 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. He came out with a runner on third with two outs, but Justin Wilson got Alan Roden to ground out to end the inning.
Gausman went 8 innings, allowing 4 hits, no walks, and 10 strikeouts. That was the best we’ve seen him this season. He gave up a single to lead off the eighth but got out with a fly out and a double play.
We had a shot in the ninth. Vlad started with a line single. But Anthony Santander stuck out (robbed on the two-strike call), and Giménez struck out. George Springer, pinch hitting, popped out to center.
Jeff Hoffman pitched the ninth and tenth for us, without giving up a run.
The Jays failed to score in the ninth, but got a run in the tenth on a Bo Bichette sac fly.
Nick Sandlin pitched the bottom of the tenth with the tying run at second and he stranded the runner there, for the his first save as a Blue Jay and second career save.
Jays of the Day: Gausman (.475 WPA), Hoffman (.464), Sandlin (.460) and Vlad (.102 for a 3 for 5).
The Other Award: Krik (-.348), Clement (-.217), Roden (-.197), and Santander (-.141, he better watch out I might name the award after him.
Tomorrow is a 4:00 Eastern start.
