MLB Insider: Blue Jays Have Interest in Prized Pitchers

July 12, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

According to Blue Jays insider Hector Gomez, the Toronto Blue Jays have interest in Edward Cabrera and Jacob deGrom if he becomes available. The MLB Trade Deadline is soon approaching, and the Blue Jays would benefit from adding an ace starter to their rotation. The Blue Jays started off the season looking like wild-card contenders, but now they’ve rolled into first place in the AL East. Adding a starter would maximize their success in the postseason.

Blue Jays Interested In Rangers and Marlins Starter

What deGrom and Cabrera Offer

Cabrera’s trade value at $14.4 million would make him worth a Ricky Tiedemann or Josh Kasevich. Cabrera would help to improve the Blue Jays as he is in the midst of a breakout season. This season the right-handed pitcher for the Marlins, is having a solid season. His 9-2 record and 2.29 ERA along with 105 strikeouts across 106.1 innings. This shows an improvement compared to his past few seasons. Overall, his ability to throw strikes and limit runs has been two areas he’s really thrived in this season. This would make him a solid pitcher to add to the Blue Jays who are looking to make some noise in the postseason this year and they are coming off of a 10 game winning streak which has come at a pivotal point in the season. With the Marlins looking like they will be sellers, Cabrera would be a solid acquisition.

Cabrera would be a great pickup considering he’s been performing well with the Miami Marlins this season. As well, he’s the kind of pitcher the Blue Jays should consider. It’s no coincidence that were seeing names of starters with two to three more years of control rumored for the Blue Jays trade targets. So far, we have heard deGrom with two more years plus a team option. Cabrera with three more years and Mitch Keller with three more years as well.

deGrom’s Assets

The two-time Cy Young and four-time All-Star is having a strong season following recovery from Tommy John surgery. This season he’s earned his fifth All-Star nod and is showing glimpses of his dominant ace form. This is paired with his low ERA (2.29) and solid strikeout rate of 25.7%. This season deGrom has already pitched more innings since 2019. Showcasing his resiliency. deGrom could join a clubhouse who is performing well and would fit in with the resurgence mentality that has been demonstrated by George Springer.

The Blue Jays are performing similar to their success in 2015, and this could mean a deeper push in the postseason if all goes well. The Blue Jays getting these two pitchers would be the equivalent of when they got David Price and Troy Tulowitzki. deGrom comes with a massive ticket attached and would likely cost a significant amount in terms of futures on top of that too. But a team that has Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom in their rotation means business.
