Bo Bichette’s status for the World Series roster is still up in the air.
That’s not even the biggest question heading into the World Series. The biggest question is, where does Bichette fit in the Toronto Blue Jays‘ lineup? If healthy enough to play, the Jays need his bat in the lineup, but Andrés Giménez has been playing great defence at shortstop, and George Springer has excelled in the designated hitter role. The answer? Second base.
According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, Bichette took ground balls at second base on Wednesday. When Blue Jays manager John Schneider was asked where he’ll play, he noted that second base, as well as shortstop and as the team’s designated hitter are all possibilities.
Asked where Bo Bichette will play between DH, SS and 2B, John Schneider said he “could see all three of those things happening” depending on how Bichette progresses. The SS continues to hit velocity, run and work out on the infield.

Of course, Bichette’s status is still up in the air, as Schneider also noted that Bichette still has to clear some hoops before he’s ready to be added to the World Series roster. That said, if he’s ready at any point in the coming week and a half, he has to be added to the roster.
John Schneider says that Bo Bichette is running, hitting and fielding today. Still “a few more boxes to check”, but sounds encouraging.

Bichette has never played anything but shortstop at the big league level. The 27-year-old has some experience playing second base, as he played 262.1 innings at the key stone throughout his minor league career. His most recent action was in 2019 when he was in Triple-A, playing eight innings at the position. Most of his innings came in 2017, when he played 14 games (124 innings) at second base in A-ball.
Playing as the Jays’ designated hitter also seems to be an option. Springer seems comfortable returning to the outfield, which would open a spot for Bichette to serve as the designated hitter. It may not be ideal to tinker with what has made Springer successful, but again, the Jays would be adding their second-best bat to the lineup.
George Springer is “very” capable of playing the outfield if needed, per John Schneider. Says he’d prefer not to take players out of their comfort zone but sounds confident that Springer could play OF as needed.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Blue Jays do for their roster when it’s announced on Friday morning.
