Report: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Signs Record Extension with Blue Jays

April 8, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays finalized a blockbuster contract extension minutes after midnight struck on Monday, April 7. The days of intense speculation over the star first baseman’s future with the franchise are over. The 14-year, $500 million deal, with no deferrals, marks the richest extension in MLB history, eclipsing Mike Trout’s $426.5 million pact with the Angels.

Blue Jays Seal Deal With Superstar Slugger

Rumors ignited Friday when insider Mike Rodriguez tweeted that Guerrero and the Jays were “very close” to a $500 million agreement. Posts across X amplified the buzz, with some citing sources claiming a resolution was imminent. By Saturday, Yancen Pujols reported the two sides had agreed on money and years, ironing out “finer details.” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale added fuel Sunday, noting Guerrero and the Jays were “exchanging figures” and expected to finalize “any day.” ESPN’s Jeff Passan sealed the anticipation, saying the team hoped to announce the deal this week.

The contract, finalizing at an astonishing $35.7 AAV (average annual value), locks in Guerrero, 26, through his age-39 season. He’ll earn $28.5 million in 2025 before the extension kicks in. The no-deferral structure reflects Guerrero’s push for present-day value. Reportedly targeting $500 million after rejecting earlier offers with deferrals dropping below that mark.

For the Blue Jays, this cements Guerrero as the franchise cornerstone after a disappointing 74-88 finish in 2024. With Bo Bichette also nearing free agency, resigning Guerrero signals a commitment to contend in a tough AL East.
