This Blue Jays Slugger is Notorious for Being a Slow Starter

May 9, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Toronto Blue Jays signed Baltimore Orioles slugger Anthony Santander for boosted offense, but he has gotten off to a slow start. Santander, aka “Tony Taters,” was signed to help the Blue Jays’ offensive woes. But the 30-year-old has a track record for being a slow, notorious starter. This season, he is sporting a .180 batting average along with five home runs, with an OBP of .267 and an OPS of .597.

The Blue Jays have relied on their big sluggers to produce timely hits, but their inconsistencies have still arisen this season. While Santander has joined a new team, signing with a new ball club involves getting into a new rhythm with new teammates. But the Blue Jays need Santander to perform better, as June baseball will be vital if they want to get back on track with more consistency.

Blue Jays Slugger Needs to Ignite Blue Jays Offense

Santander’s Hitting Situation

With three bombs in his last eight games, the Blue Jays are hopeful that their offseason signing Santander has the power to spark the team’s offense. Santander has shown flashes of his timely hits, where he hit a three-run bomb against the Boston Red Sox to come back from a 6-0 deficit.

This was an eventful game that demonstrated the Blue Jays’ ability to come back from games. The Blue Jays also can’t afford to dig themselves deep in holes and have to power back late in games. The Blue Jays have all the hitting tools in their lineup. Pointing to the fact that they should be able to gain ground in the AL East standings. However, their inability to consistently generate wins has been a continuous problem. If Santander can improve his chase rate and be more disciplined at the plate, he will provide the Blue Jays with a powerful swing that won’t have them second-guessing why they signed the slugger.

Why Santander’s Bat is Vital

Blue Jays Offensive Troubles

This was an eventful game that demonstrated the Blue Jays’ ability to come back from games. The Blue Jays also can’t afford to dig themselves deep in holes and have to power back late in games. The Blue Jays have all the hitting tools in their lineup, where they should be smooth sailing. But they haven’t succeeded in gaining ground in the AL East standings. Overall, their inability to consistently generate wins has been a continuous problem. If Santander can improve his chase rate and be more disciplined at the plate, he will provide the Blue Jays with a powerful swing that won’t have them second-guessing why they signed the slugger.

Santander hitting behind Vladdy has provided the Blue Jays with powerful bats at the top of the lineup. But the Blue Jays need to get the bats going, and provide run support to their rotation. The Blue Jays starting rotation has struggled with giving up the long ball. Essentially, this is one area that they need to improve on. The Blue Jays also need to capitalize on the opportunities they are presented with. If they are granted an bases-loaded chance they need to capitalize on another team’s mistakes. Santander was a solid pickup, but they need to utilize his strengths in the best way possible. Overall, Santander has provided the Blue Jays with a boosted offense. But his offense alone will not get the Blue Jays to the postseason.
