A look at how our pitchers performed the last two weeks.
Over the past two weeks, the Blue Jays were 6-6. The pitchers had a 2.74 ERA.
Hot
Chris Bassitt: 3 starts, 1-0, 0.52 ERA. In 17.1 innings, batters hit .191/.227/.254 with 0 home runs, 3 walk and 24 strikeouts.
One of the three starts was a Quality Start, the other two were 5.2 innings, and 5 innings. They seem to be being careful with his pitch count. I enjoy watching him pitch.
Kevin Gausman: 3 starts, 1-1, 2.33 ERA. In 19.1 innings, batters hit .182/.203/.364 with 3 home runs, 2 walks and 16 strikeouts.
Two of the three starts were Quality Starts; in the other, he went 5.1 innings. Right-handed batters are hitting .122/.116/.268 against him. Lefties hit .222/.271/.422. So far this season, he’s struck out 22.0% of batters, and that’s after just four strikeouts in his first two starts.
Jeff Hoffman: 5 games, 2-0, 1 save, 1.42 ERA. In 6.1 innings, batters hit .100/.136/.300 with 1 home run, 1 walk and 9 strikeouts.
He gave up 2 hits in the 6.1 innings, one a home run. He’s been terrific. I like that John has used him for two innings twice now.
Yimi Garcia: 5 games, 2 holds, 1 blown save, 0.00 ERA. In 5.1 innings, he’s allowed 3 hits (all singles), 3 walks and 9 strikeouts.
He’s been terrific. In his nine appearances, he’s allowed just 4 hits.
Brendon Little: 7 games, 3 holds, 1 blown save, 3.60 ERA. In 5 innings batters hit .111/.273/.222.
He’s been great. I said the other day that he doesn’t fill me with confidence, but he’s really done well. So far, this season, LHB are hitting him much better (.222/.300/.500) than RHB (.067/.177/.067).
Yariel Rodriguez: 4 games, 2.08 ERA. In 4.1 innings batters hit .133/.278/.200 with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
His first appearance of the season didn’t go well, since then he’s been fine.
Jacob Barnes; 3 games, 0.00 ERA. In 4.2 innings, batters hit .143/.133/.143 with 0 walks and 2 strikeouts.
He seems to be the one that John forgets is in the bullpen.
Mason Fluharty: 5 games, 4.91 ERA. In 3.2 innings. batters hit .154/.313/.308 with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.
He had the one bad outing, but the rest have been excellent. He’s been a significant improvement on Richard Lovelady.
Cold
Easton Lucas: 2 starts, 1-1, 6.97 ERA. In 10.1 innings, batters hit .237/.326/.526 with 3 home runs, 5 walks and 11 strikeouts.
He had one good start (5.1 innings, 0 runs) and one bad start (5 innings, 8 earned)—his next start is Sunday against the Mariners.
In Between
José Berríos: 2 starts, 1-0, 3.75 ERA. In 12.0 innings, batters hit .250/.306/.477 with 2 home runs, 4 walks and 8 strikeouts.
One Quality Start, one poor start (4 innings, 4 earned). He’s given up five home runs in his four starts this season. Max Scherzer threw the other day, and says he was happy with it, but he will also see a hand specialist again, so I’m not thinking he’ll be back in a hurry.
Bowden Francis: 2 starts, 0-2, 4.09 ERA. In 11 innings, batters hit .225/.304/.400 with 2 home runs, 4 walks and 11 strikeouts.
He hasn’t been as good as he was at the end of the last season. The 21.7% strikeout rate is much the same as last year, but he’s walking 10.1% of batters, twice his rate from last year.
Chad Green: 5 games, 1.69 ERA. In 5.1 innings, batters hit .263/.333/.474 with 1 home run, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.
He’s getting hit pretty hard.
Nick Sandlin: 6 games, 0-2, 2 holds, 1 save, 1 blown save. In 3.2 innings, batters hit .294/.400/.353 with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.
Has also been hit pretty hard early this season.
IL
Max Scherzer: It doesn’t seem the team has a timeline for him to return. He is to see a hand specialist again this week, and he threw in Florida yesterday. There were conflicting stories, some saying he was ‘encouraged’ after throwing, some saying he had a setback.
