Everyone’s in the best shape of their lives!
Incredibly, we’re now just two sleeps away from Maple Leafs training camp officially getting underway on Thursday morning in Toronto. On Monday, the Leafs held their annual charity golf tournament in Milton Ontario. Naturally, that’s where the conversation started on the latest edition of Leafs Morning Take as we ramp back up to a full-time schedule. Newcomer Nicolas Roy says he’s been impressed from what he’s seen on the ice out of Morgan Rielly. Obviously, this is a big year for the veteran defender. He needs to find a way to get back to his old self.
After that, we discussed the idea of the Leafs signing Dillon Dube. On Monday morning, during his appearance on TSN 1050’s First Up, NHL Insider Darren Dreger said that he “wouldn’t be surprised if Treliving and the Leafs put their hat in the ring and take a decent swing at Dillon Dube.” Ultimately, we don’t think the fit makes sense. The Leafs currently possess a lot of forwards, they’re not really in a position to add up in front —unless they’re bringing in a marquee name.
Brought to you by Simply Spiked, we played our interview with Anthony Stolarz from late last week. He touched on everything from the concussion against Florida to his offseason training to his current contract status. On top of that, Stolarz had a lot of great things to say about his tandem mate Joseph Woll. In short order, it really felt like the duo were able to forge a strong relationship last season. They’ve got that Swayman/Ullmark feel. As Stolarz explained, it’s a healthy competition.
To wrap, we discussed training camp storylines as we each offered up a top 3 list. In total, we had six different storylines, which just tells you everything you need to know about this market. Rosey is curious about the third line, the influx of forwards, and where Matias Macceli will fit in. Additionally, some other storylines to watch closely: Where Easton Cowan fits, who takes Marner’s spot on the top line, and how Auston Matthews will look out of the gates.
At any rate, we’ll be back on Thursday (11 AM ET) for another edition of Leafs Morning Take. It’s the first day of training camp, so rest assured, there will be a lot to discuss. Also, we’ll play our interview from last week with Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
