Around the NHL: Penguins acquire Silovs, Devils’ Bratt eyes next step for New Jersey, Roslovic remains best available free agent

July 14, 2025 by The Leafs Nation

The 2025 NHL offseason continues as two weeks have passed since the start of free agency. The trade market continues to be active as teams are trying to fill gaps throughout their organizational depth, meanwhile the free-agent market has become quite thin with talent, however there’s still a few impact players who have yet to sign contracts.

Here’s the very latest from around the NHL:

Pittsburgh Penguins acquire AHL MVP Arturs Silovs from Vancouver Canucks

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks struck a deal over the weekend as the Pens acquired goaltender Arturs Silovs from the Canucks in exchange for forward Chase Stillman and a 2027 fourth-round draft pick.

Pittsburgh was desperate for some goaltending depth this offseason, adding Silovs to battle it out in the Penguins’ crease with Tristan Jarry and Joel Blomqvist. The 24-year-old Silovs is coming off a breakout season in the American Hockey League, leading the Abbotsford Canucks to a Calder Cup championship.

Silovs went 16-7 in the playoffs, posting a 2.07 goals against average and .931 save percentage, on route to winning the playoff’s most valuable player award. His strong postseason came after a regular season in which he registered a 14-5-1 in the AHL, along with a 2-6-1 record with the Canucks, including a 3.65 goals against average.

Silovs immediately upgrades the Penguins goaltending depth and has a legitimate shot at starting for the team as early as next season. Stillman is a former first-round pick of the New Jersey Devils, and was originally acquired by the Penguins back in March in a deal that included Cody Glass and Jonathan Gruden. The 22-year-old has yet to appear in an NHL game and after he joined Wilkes-Barre Scranton following the trade, scored one goal and three points in 19 games.

Keep an eye on the Penguins, they are far from finished making deals. There’s been a lot of chatter around Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell being moved at some point this offseason, meanwhile Erik Karlsson, Ryan Graves, and even Tristan Jarry are considered trade candidates this summer.

As for the Canucks, they extended Thatcher Demko recently and have $9.5 million tied up in Demko and Kevin Lankinen for the next four seasons.

Jesper Bratt expecting productive 2025-26 season in New Jersey

The New Jersey Devils are trying to have a breakout 2025-26 season, and Jesper Bratt feels he can be smack dab in the middle of it. Bratt spoke to Ronnie Ronnkvist via Daily Faceoff, and opened up about the sky high expectations in New Jersey, who are heading into season two of the Sheldon Keefe-era.

“The season was still a step in the right direction for the team,” Bratt said. “We had a new coach, a lot of new players, pretty high expectations, and some unfortunate injuries that held us back a bit during the playoffs. But we played really well up until Christmas. After that, I think we let up a little and didn’t take the step we had hoped to take as a team. We were far too inconsistent in the second half of the season. Then we just weren’t strong enough in the playoffs to win. We played a few good games and it was definitely a step in the right direction. With a year under our belt with our new coach, we players have a better sense of how we want to play and what the standard is.”

The Devils had some terrible injury luck as several players were down for an extended period of time including two of their best in Jack Hughes and Dougie Hamilton. Bratt helped carry the offence in Hughes’ absence, recording 21 goals and a franchise record 67 assists. He’s had offseason shoulder surgery and is hopeful himself, and all his teammates can be 100% healthy for training camp, and get off to a strong start next season.

“Everything’s gone great, and the shoulder is getting better and better each week. It looks like I’ll be ready for camp.”

Jack Roslovic continues to lead the ‘best of the rest’

Free-agent forward Jack Roslovic is the best player on the open market as the middle of July is upon us. The 28-year-old scored 22 goals last season in 81 games, while adding 17 assists for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The versatile Roslovic has experience playing both on the wing and at centre, so it’s a touch surprising he hasn’t signed on with a new team yet, however a new contract will be coming at some point. Some feel a three-year deal at around $4 million is what Roslovic’s projected to sign.

The Maple Leafs have been linked to signing Roslovic as they continue to try and add a top-six forward. Roslovic and Auston Matthews have played together in the past within the US hockey program, so the transition to Toronto, and jumping on Matthews’ right wing could be a seamless transition.

As far as the rest of the free agent market goes, other players who have yet to sign a new contract include Matt Grzelcyk, Max Pacioretty, Victor Olofsson, Luke Kunin, Ilya Samsonov, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Michael Carcone, Luke Glendening, Alexandar Georgiev, Robby Fabbri, Jan Rutta, and TJ Brodie.

Quick hits from around the NHL:

  • The Montreal Canadiens have been named a team to watch by the Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta. The Canadiens already made a huge move to acquire Noah Dobson, and could try and move Josh Anderson this offseason, while also searching for a second-line centre via the trade market.
  • Former Dallas Stars and San Jose Sharks forward Joe Pavelski shot 73 to win his first American Century Golf Championship on Sunday. The American Century Championship is an annual celebrity golf tournament held after the second full week of July at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort on the shore of Lake Tahoe in Nevada.
  • Top 2026 NHL prospect Gavin McKenna is skipping out on the Western Hockey League and has committed to Penn State University. It’s the new era of junior hockey, as the CHL is going to lose out on a ton of high-end talent who would rather play NCAA hockey during their draft years.
  • The Edmonton Oilers acquired the top NCAA player from last season in Isaac Howard from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for prospect Sam O’Reilly.
  • Colorado Avalanche re-signed defenceman Josh Manson to a two-year contract.
  • Former figure skating star David Pelletier is getting his first shot at being an NHL assistant coach. The Dallas Stars announced Friday that Pelletier is joining new head coach Glen Gulutzan’s staff. The 50-year-old from Sayabec, Que., had been a skating coach with the Edmonton Oilers for the last 11 years.
