Ryan Tverberg scored twice for the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect team in a 4-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at the 2025 Prospect Showdown.
It was a passionate battle between both historical rivals, with three fights taking place, two of which occurred during a tense first period. Maple Leafs forward Braeden Kressler took on Canadiens forward Mark Estapa, then Maple Leafs forward Landon Sim proceeded to fight Canadiens defenceman Andrew MacNiel. During the second frame, Maple Leafs forward Sam MuCue dropped the gloves against Canadiens forward Tyler Thorpe.
Ryan Kirwan opened the scoring for the Maple Leafs late in the first period. Luke Haymes won the puck back to Harry Nansi off the faceoff, Nansi tapped it back to Kirwan, who made no mistake with a quick release, beating Canadiens goaltender Jacob Fowler cleanly. It was Kirwan’s second goal in as many games, previously getting on the board in Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators prospects team.

Haymes remained in excellent form, and also scored for the second consecutive game, during a 5-on-3 power play. Tyler Hopkins won the puck back to the point, then Chas Sharpe wired a cross-ice pass to Haymes, who one-timed it past Fowler for the 2-0 lead. Haymes was one of the best players throughout the practice sessions, and he was arguably Toronto’s best player overall throughout the Prospect Showdown.

Filip Mesar responded for the Canadiens during the second period, after Maple Leafs defenceman Ben Danford turned the puck over, while trying to force a pass through centre ice.
Tverberg scored the first of his two goals during the third period, burying a feed from Jacob Quillan at the goalmouth. He would later add an empty-net market to seal the 4-1 victory for the Maple Leafs.

It’s been a compelling week for the Maple Leafs prospects with Haymes, Quillan and Tverberg often operating in a different tier than the majority of the forward corps, while top prospect Easton Cowan had the night off. After a fight-filled affair, Sunday’s game against the Canadiens may be a contest that each team may keep top of mind during the preseason, with training camp slated to begin Monday.
