Crazy season in the NHL world is officially here.
All eyes were on the city of Edmonton on Thursday, and Connor McDavid did not disappoint. The Oilers’ captain had a chance to quash any speculation about a potential future outside of Edmonton, and he didn’t. Ultimately, he probably ends up re-signing in Edmonton, but you just never know.
We covered a variety of different topics on the Friday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Firstly, we gave our quick thoughts on Jonathan Toews landing in Winnipeg. After that, we spent a decent amount of time dissecting McDavid’s comments and what they mean for his future. From a Maple Leafs perspective, it did bring a sliver of hope. After all, he grew up a monster Leafs fan and we all saw his face at the 2015 NHL Draft Lottery when Edmonton won.
Additionally, we broke down my report from Thursday night regarding Matthew Knies. At this point, the Leafs and Knies’ camp aren’t close on extension talks. That said, that can all change with one phone call. Neither side is overly concerned, but obviously, we all know what could potentially come into play on July 1st.
Next, brought to you by Charm Diamond Centres, Nick Kypreos dropped by the show. As per usual, he was spicy and flavourful. We covered a lot of ground. We started with getting Kyper’s thoughts on what McDavid had to say. After that, he dished on Toronto’s offseason plan, Tavares, Marner, and Knies talks. Lastly, he weighed in on the Florida guys and if there’s any shot of one of them landing in Toronto. Kyper thinks the Marchand to Toronto talk is real.
Lastly, for the CRISPI HOT TAKE OF THE DAY, presented by the Ninja Crispi 4-in-1 Portable Glass Air Fryer, Producer Vick thinks the Leafs should avoid locking into any long-term deals —because even a 1% chance at McDavid is worth keeping the books clean. S-P-I-C-Y.
That will do it for another week of Leafs Morning Take. Join us on Monday at 11 AM ET as we tee up draft week. BUSINESS is about to pick up, folks.
