Troy Stecher’s mobility and relentless drive have injected new life into Leafs’ defence corps

December 5, 2025 by The Leafs Nation

Troy Stecher was initially envisioned as a stop-gap option for a porous Toronto Maple Leafs’ defence. Toronto’s poor start to the year could largely be attributed to poor defensive zone coverage and five-man breakdowns when defending the rush. These tendencies, in conjunction with a wave of injuries, placed the Maple Leafs’ season in peril at the U.S. Thanksgiving juncture, the first real checkpoint of the campaign.

Stecher’s mobility, relentless drive and ability to facilitate exits have injected new life into the Maple Leafs’ defence corps. He’s no longer a stop-gap and should be a permanent fixture in the lineup, even when Chris Tanev and Brandon Carlo return from injury. Stecher joined the Maple Leafs with a self-professed chip on his shoulder, and he may have found a permanent home well into his 10th season.

During his first media availability with the Maple Leafs on November 17, Stecher spoke about how all players are acquainted with the systems across the league. There was a natural curiosity, especially with so much time afforded to analyzing whether Craig Berube’s firm north-south edict was the best approach for a talented team performing worse than the sum of their parts.

“We play a 1-2-2 here in the neutral zone,” Stecher told The Leafs Nation on November 20, after the morning skate. “The d-men are inside the dots. It’s kind of the last line of defence, and you have to try to steer the puck from the right side to the left. Most teams play a 1-2-2. A lot of times, your success is dictated by the head of the snake, which would be F1 because everybody has to read off of him. He’s going to middle ice, then it’s a lot harder to defend, because you can go from right to left, where you can push the puck to one side of the ice, it’s a lot easier for the defender because there’s way less space space to move and make plays.”

Stecher’s cerebral approach to the game is certainly paying off, and he’s ruthlessly competitive. You’ll hear ‘competitive’ thrown around a lot. It’s the first word that sources within the Leafs organization described Stecher as, upon joining the team. And you just need to tune into the games to see how Stecher’s relentless drive, especially in puck battles, where he’s often the scrappiest player in the fight, has galvanized the Leafs during the road trip.

Stecher has been elevated into a second-pair role, with Tanev and Carlo out, and he’s thriving. Toronto controls 54.5 percent of the shot attempts and 62.7 percent of the expected goals when Stecher is on the ice at 5-on-5 via Natural Stat Trick. These are the best totals on the Maple Leafs since Stecher played his first game with the club on November 18. Stecher has also posted a plus-five (9-4) goal differential at 5-on-5, winning his minutes comfortably.

Considering that Stecher was a waiver claim and his increased deployment, this is a major win for both Stecher and the Maple Leafs. Stecher ranks second on the Maple Leafs in goals for per 60 and third in goals against per 60 at 5-on-5 since joining the team. He’s become an essential part of the team, during a time where the club is trying to turn their season around.

Stecher isn’t known for his offensive contributions, but he’s picking his spots wisely, and was rewarded with the game’s opening goal against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. You could make the case that Stecher was the Leafs’ best player overall during the November 18 victory against the St. Louis Blues, and again during Tuesday’s victory against the Panthers.

Stecher is playing his heart out for the Maple Leafs, and has been welcome relief for a team that was quickly becoming one of the NHL’s worst defensive units. Toronto is striving for greater consistency in the defensive zone, better gap control against the rush, and easy exits. Stecher has ticked off all the boxes thus far, and while it would be unfair to start expecting star-level results for the duration of the year, his hockey intelligence, supreme work ethic, and chip on his shoulder has led to excellent defensive results for a team needing a boost.
