Utah Mammoth Trade Disgruntled Forward to Toronto Maple Leafs

July 6, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Today the Utah Mammoth announced that they have traded forward Matias Maccelli to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2027 conditional third-round draft pick, which was, ironically enough, originally owned by Toronto. The pick becomes a second rounder in 2029 if Maccelli records at least 51 points next season and the Maple Leafs qualify the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

We’ve traded Matias Maccelli to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Toronto’s own 3rd Round Draft Pick in 2027 (conditional).

Matias Maccelli Traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs

It was a difficult year for Maccelli, who had a breakout year during the 2023-2024 season. The 24-year-old scored just 18 points this past year after previously setting a career-high of 57. He was a healthy scratch multiple times, having played in just 55 games. Maccelli’s move away from Utah was inevitable, as he requested a trade during the season. During the final stretch of the season is where things really went south for Maccelli. After falling out of favour with the coaching staff, he appeared in just three of the final 20 games of 2024-25.

Maccelli will now get a chance to fight for a spot and earn playing time in Toronto’s top six. He is in the final year of a three-year contract with a cap hit of $3.425 million. With the trade, the Maple Leafs will own his restricted free agent signing rights in 2026. This is a low-risk deal for Toronto and Utah gains more cap room.

What Does Utah Lose With the Move

After trading for JJ Peterka, the Mammoth added another star player that will slide into their top-six. However, moving Maccelli leaves a hole in Utah’s bottom-six. Although he wanted to be in a larger role, Maccelli could have provided that extra scoring on the third line and perhaps the second power play unit. Utah will now need to fill that spot, either internally or in free agency. The Mammoth are rumoured to be searching for offence once the free agency period opens tomorrow.
