Veteran Toronto Maple Leaf Re-Signs

June 28, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs John Tavares re-signs with the club. Today it was announced that the Maple Leaf veteran centre will be sticking around Toronto for a few more years, four to be exact. The 2024-25 season marked the 16th season of Tavares’ career, and everyone feels that there’s some unfinished business in Toronto. The average annual value is being reported as $4.38 million.

Toronto Maple Leafs Centre John Tavares Re-Signs

The Leafs, under previous general manager Kyle Dubas, originally signed the Toronto area native back in July of 2018. That contract was paying Tavares $11 million per year.

Statistically, John Tavares has had a very productive career with the Leafs and before that, the New York Islanders. In the 2023-24 campaign, Tavares surpassed the monumental 1000-career point mark. On that year, he had 29 goals and 36 assists for 65 points in 80 games. This most recent campaign saw him record 38 goals and 36 assists for 74 points in 75 games played. 38 goals was good for second on the club, behind William Nylander (45). Moreover, he has stayed very consistent throughout his career, and has always been relied upon for major responsibility. In his first year with the Leafs in 2018-19, Tavares had his career high in goals (47) and points (88). So it set the tone for his career as a Leaf.

What Does this Mean for the Leafs and Tavares?

As John Tavares re-signs with the club, it is just one less thing the GM needs to worry about finetuning the roster. Furthermore, Tavares has been a top centre, an offensive force, and a power play fixture throughout his career. He may see a reduced role, but has shown that he can still be a very efficient scorer. His leadership has really shone through this past season.
