Raptors, Heat Complete Important Trade Before Deadline

February 7, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Toronto Raptors defenders led by Davion Mitchell attempt to stop Miami Heat big man Bam Adebayo

The Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat both made major trades yesterday, but they’re not done negotiating just yet. According to ESPN senior insider Shams Charania, the Raptors have agreed to trade Davion Mitchell to the Heat in exchange for PJ Tucker, a second-round pick, and cash. Notably, Tucker was part of the package that went to Miami when they shipped Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors.

For Toronto, the trade makes sense on several levels.

When they acquired Mitchell from the Sacramento Kings, it was a deal that many believed the Raptors won. After all, they acquired three rotation-caliber players (Mitchell, Sasha Vezenkov, and Jamal Shead) and a second-round pick in exchange for an end-of-bench player (Jalen McDaniels). Furthermore, as a highly regarded on-ball defender, Mitchell was expected to be a key piece for Toronto.

Unexpectedly perhaps, the gap between Mitchell and Shead wasn’t substantial. Mitchell may be an elite defender until the day that he retires. Unfortunately for him, he was often a mediocre scoring threat, which made him a liability on offense. Shead is a strong defender when shooting deficiencies as well. However, he’s not on the verge of free agency.

Ultimately, the Raptors have completed a trade that allowed them to add assets for a player who probably would’ve left them in the offseason. In the meantime, Tucker brings a level of competitiveness and defensive mastery that Toronto’s perimeter players could learn from. That is, if he isn’t bought out of his contract, which would allow him to join a surefire contender.

For the Heat, the trade makes sense as well.

Tucker’s defense and playoff experience are still highly-touted. However, there was a bit of a logjam in their frontcourt, minimizing the impact he would’ve made in Miami. Meanwhile, their backcourt unit is rather thin. Given Tyler Herro and Terry Rozier‘s injury history, it made even more sense to bring in guard depth. The fact that he’s an excellent defender only adds to his importance, as neither Herro nor Rozier have been as strong at that end as the Heat would like.
