Raptors not interested in Domantas Sabonis

June 3, 2025 by Hoops Hype

Doug Smith on Domantas Sabonis: I’ve never heard his name in a conversation with anybody involved with the Raptors for a year and a half. They’re pretty happy with Jakob Poeltl with two years left in his deal at 20 million a year. Sabonis is a great player. No question about it. But I’ve never heard his name linked to Toronto. Anybody who I’ve talked to in the Raptors front office has never talked as a guy as that they would like to pursue.

Indy traded Paul George to OKC for Victor Oladipo + Domantas Sabonis.
Indy traded Sabonis for Tyrese Haliburton.
OKC traded George for SGA and picks.. one that became JDub.

More on this storyline

Jonas Valanciunas: “I’m telling you, Domas is truly one of the most talented centers. He’s the fourth most efficient NBA player—I checked it today. That’s never happened in Lithuanian history. Fourth most efficient player in the entire NBA! I think he’s easily top 5, even top 3 among centers. And I have no problem substituting for him. If we’re winning, if he’s playing well—I’ve talked to the coach, to him too—go, dominate, if you need me—I’m here, if not—I’m still here.” -via YouTube / May 17, 2025
Jonas Valanciunas recently shared details about how he learned of his trade to the Sacramento Kings. The veteran center revealed that his close teammate on the National team, Domantas Sabonis, played a key role in breaking the news and that there were other teams interested in him. “I found out I was going to Domas (Sabonis),” JV said during a Lithuanian podcast with BasketNews. There were other teams in the mix — some new potential destinations.” “But there wasn’t much talk about Domas and Sacramento. Denver (Nuggets) came up, Phoenix (Suns) too — things were unclear there with Nurkic. San Antonio (Spurs) was also in the picture. So yeah, there were a few teams,” he added. -via BasketNews / May 17, 2025
Speaking of the summer, Coach, that used to be prime time for you and Dom Sabonis to get your work in. How has that relationship evolved with your change in title, and kind of where is it at now since you know things have changed a bit?” Doug Christie: “Uh, Domas called me. We’ve talked, we text. You know, Tiger had his first soccer game, so we talked about that. We haven’t really talked about all of that. It’s more about life and, you know, just things. But, you know, I love him to death. He has been so instrumental in a lot of things that I’ve done and just humbled to be able to work with such a great talent. And as far as, you know, him and working and all those things, we just have to get together and communicate and talk about it and his goals. I already know them, but, you know, we need to address them from this perspective and make sure that he gets everything that he needs, and I will—I will make sure that that happens.” -via YouTube / May 3, 2025
