Would Raptors Replicate Kawhi Leonard Trade With Jimmy Butler?

January 5, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes defends against Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler

The Toronto Raptors are technically considered a rebuilding team.

Just last season, they traded away former cornerstone Pascal Siakam for a pick-heavy package that demonstrated their willingness to trust the process. However, they also moved OG Anunoby in what was arguably a lopsided deal that favored them. Though the New York Knicks needed a player with Anunoby’s specific skillset, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley are more dynamic. Adding them to a core headlined by Scottie Barnes gave them a trio of potential stars that could grow together over the next decade.

Because their ‘Gen Z 3’ are so talented, their rise should’ve been accelerated. Yet, unfortunately for the Raptors, they’ve been unable to stay healthy. This has resulted in more losses and less chemistry than expected. There’s still plenty of time for the trio but the franchise now seems to need a shot in the arm.

Enter Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler.

Butler’s on the outs in Miami after making it clear that he would like to be traded.

Truthfully, the drama in South Beach is made for soap operas. There are disputes about money and loyalty. It’s not clear who the protagonist or antagonist is. The resolution will likely come with a bombshell revelation.

Toronto should be the franchise who swoops in to save the day. Unlike many other teams, the Raptors are able to offer the Heat a trade package featuring just expiring contracts and first-round picks. Specifically, Bruce Brown, Davion Mitchell, Chris Boucher, a 2025 first-round pick and a top-four protected 2026 first-round pick (via the Indiana Pacers). Far from pocket lint, all three players come with a positive reputation on the defensive end, which is ingrained in Heat culture.

Meanwhile, Toronto gets a chance to repeat the scenario that led to them winning their first championship in franchise history.

In 2018, the Raptors traded a top-20 protected first-round pick, Jakob Poeltl, and former face of the franchise DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, and cash. Leonard only played one season with the franchise after agreeing to team up with Paul George in free agency. Nonetheless, he accomplished more for the Raptors in that singular season than some players have done in their entire career.

Can They Bottle Lightning (Again)?

History could repeat itself with Butler, another masterful defender who would fit Toronto well.

To that point, with the Raptors, he wouldn’t need to focus on scoring except in the games that injury or matchups dictated. Instead, he could do the dirty work at the less glamorous end, being the physical presence that they sorely need on the perimeter. From anecdotal evidence, Butler won’t just set the tone in games but in practice as well. That’s not just because he’s a prized defender but a highly decorated vocal leader, which sets him apart from Brown and Mitchell.

Though his confidence can border on egotism, his maniacal mindset is similar to that of Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan. Neither Bryant nor Jordan are truly the most naturally talented players that have been in the NBA. They got where they were because of their work ethic more than their innate ability. Butler is another star who believes in maximizing his talent, which should rub off on their young players.

Of course, Butler will likely become a free agent in the offseason. However, his eclectic persona does seem to be a match for Toronto, which could make it easier to re-sign him. In any case, if he can bring the Raptors to the NBA Finals like he’s been doing for Miami, there won’t be any hard feelings.

Just like with Leonard.
