Puebla vs. Monterrey might prove to be disruptive for the play-off hopeful California Peninsula outfit; if Rayados falls to Los Camoteros. In terms of points, Puebla only has eight points while Monterrey is in the playoff race as they have 13 points.

Current Puebla vs. Monterrey Club Forms

Monterrey (2-0-3)

Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Tigres was not the step towards the Final Series Monterrey was hoping for. Wins against Leon and Guadalajara backed the poor result up. Before that, though, tight defeats to Toluca and Cruz Azul created a necessity for Rayados to perform well. A key benefit for the squad is that they have played two fewer games than most clubs in Liga MX.

Tenth place is good enough for the final Play-Off spot in the Mexican top-flight. Monterrey will look to defend that spot desperately. The Baja California outlet lost in the Leagues Cup semifinals, but are looking for redemption in their domestic campaign. That road to another spot in the Concacaf Champions League starts with an Apertura win against Puebla.

Despite still sitting bottom of the Liga MX table, Puebla have begun to turn their fortunes around. Wins against Juarez and Atlas in their past five matches, although coupled with losses to Mazatlan and Pumas, have secured seven of their total eight points in a span of only five fixtures. Due to the tight nature of the league table, a hot streak could get Los Camoteros into the Final Series Play-Offs.

The biggest inconsistency in Puebla’s form is their goal-scoring record. This capable squad can knock multiple shots past a talented keeper, or be stifled by a less-then-impressive defense. The club from Mexico’s fourth-largest city seems to play their best football when they are not the leaders in possession. Often Los Camoteros execute perfect counter-attacks to shock opponents.

Monterrey’s most crucial piece for this match will be Sergio Canales. An attacking midfielder who just joined from La Liga’s Real Betis, the 32-year-old former UEFA Nations League winner has netted five times in ten matches with his new team. If Canales does not score the goal, he will be providing Argentine forward Rogelio Funes Mori with a clinical assist.

Defender Gaston Silva provides Puebla with a solid backline. The former Uruguay National Team player also joined from a Spanish team. After stints with Huesca and Cartagena, Silva moved to Puebla in 2022. Containing Monterrey’s dangerous attack will depend on how well Liga MX’s bottom-placed squad performs in their back third.
