Recap: Canadians combine to give Toronto FC a big away win over Orlando City

Osorio and Chapman bring the heat on a hot day in Orlando

May is off to a flying start for Toronto FC after a 2-0 away victory over Orlando City SC. Jonathan Osorio and Jay Chapman both scored, while Quentin Westberg earned his first win and clean sheet.

Toronto FC spent stretches of the first half under siege from an Orlando City SC side who had clearly watched plenty of video on the visiting reds. They used their wealth of wide players to burn TFC down the flanks throughout the opening half.

This led to several quality scoring chances, which Toronto did just enough to see out. Chris Mavinga was crucial in this regard, making some big challenges and clearances. Westberg came up with a massive save on ex- Toronto FC player Will Johnson to keep the game 0-0.

The reds started the second half far better, holding possession well, and using their own width through Auro to create several chances.

However, it was an individual effort that broke the deadlock. Jonathan Osorio tallied his third of the season in spectacular fashion when he beat several Orlando defenders before curling a shot into the top corner.

Earlier in the half, Jay Chapman came on as a substitute to replace the injured Nick DeLeon. All year he has been a very reliable player coming off the bench, and today was no different. He doubled Toronto’s lead in the 77th minute.

He brought down a great ball from Alejandro Pozuelo brilliantly and then found a way through Brian Rowe’s legs from a wide angle. The goal was his second of the season.

Orlando would have a few more chances before the end of the match, but Westberg came up big once again. It was an excellent performance from the Toronto keeper who’s distribution could certainly prove to be a massive asset going forward.

The win is Greg Vanney’s 85th as a coach, that is more than all of the other coaches in Toronto FC history combined.

Is Westberg now the starter? Other thoughts on the win?
