Toronto FC remains winless at BMO Field this year. However, up until Saturday, they also had an unbeaten run at BMO Field where they tied all their games. Well, that unbeaten run is over as the Revolution found a way to win. It did feel that TFC was the better team but were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances.

New England Revolution took advantage of their chances

The New England Revolution opened the scoring in the 20-minute. DeJuan Jones was the one who supplied the cross. However, the story of the goal was Tajon Buchanan’s header. His shot went past a diving Alex Bono and back into the net. The Revolution would then get a shot in the 26 and the 41-minute. However, both shots missed the net.

They would actually not get a shot on target until late in the second half. Eriq Zavaleta took Adam Buksa down in the penalty area. This penalty allowed Bou to score the game-winner at BMO Field. It was a well-taken penalty in the top corner. TFC goalkeeper Alex Bono had no chance of saving the shot.

Toronto FC did not take advantage of their chances

Toronto had more than enough opportunities to win or even earn a point against New England. Their first chance came in the 30-minute when Ifunanyachi Achara’s shot hit the post. TFC also looked threatening in the 44-minute, until Richie Laryea slipped in the 44-minute. Marky Delgado also had a shot in the 45+1-minute of play, which missed.

There were more chances in the second half. One of the most notable ones was Delgado. The play was set up perfectly by Alejandro Pozuelo and Richie Laryea and there was a good build-up to the play by Jonathan Osorio. However, Delgado’s shot went straight to New England goalkeeper Matt Turner. It was a glorious chance missed. In the 64-minute, Yeferson Soteldo’s shot missed.

TFC kept pressuring the Revolution and it eventually paid off with a goal. Pozuelo made a terrific pass to Osorio, who put the ball into the back of the net. Unfortunately, New England scored straight after, which was unfortunate. TFC felt they should deserve more, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. It was also the Revs defence though that kept TFC with not many good scoring chances in the first half.

New England Revolution defence

Credit to the Revs defence. They made it hard for Toronto to score. In fact, in the first half, Toronto was never able to get behind New England’s defence. There were a few examples of the Revolution playing good defence against TFC.

  • Jones made a good defensive play on a Yeferson Soteldo cross in the 16-minute.
  • Osorio’s shot was stopped in the 51-minute.
  • The Revs defence was resolute when TFC attacked in the dying minutes of the game.

It was not perfect, but the Revolution got the job done. It is important to note that the Revolution only had 36.6 percent of the possession. As a result, New England had to defend a lot on the road.

TFC’s winless streak at BMO Field is extended to five games. Also, their four-game unbeaten run at BMO Field ends with the 1-2 loss against the Revolution. Once again, TFC has trouble maintaining momentum after scoring a goal. There was a similar situation at BMO Field when Toronto faced Orlando City SC. Jozy Altidore just scored, and TFC gave up a penalty almost immediately and gave up the eventual game-tying goal. The storyline of this game might have been different if TFC was able to prevent the Revs second goal.

Unfortunately, injuries were also a topic in this game. In the 55-minute, Matt Polster got an apparent injury after having a bit of an awkward landing. The injury looked serious, but Pollster was able to walk on his own and exit the field. The one in the 69-minute though is worrying.

This is especially true for TFC fans. The call which would eventually be called offside was where Ralph Priso got an injury. He was unfortunately in visible pain and had to leave the game. Everyone is wishing Priso and Polster a speedy recovery from their injuries. However, the flag offside was given too late, and it is something referees need to work on and correct for future games.

Both teams are in complete opposite spectrums of the league. New England has the best record in the league with 43 points. They are six points ahead of Sporting Kansas City in the Supporters’ Shield race. However, Kansas City has played one less game than New England. This is while Toronto is bottom of the league and in the Eastern Conference with 15 points. They are 11 points behind Canadian Classique rivals CF Montréal, who currently have 26 points. Montreal currently holds the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto’s next game will take place on Wednesday, August. 18 at Atlanta United FC at Mercedez-Benz Stadium. This is while New England will also play on August 18 against D.C. United at Gillette Stadium. Both games will take place at 7:00 p.m. ET. The TFC game will be shown nationally on TSN4. The game was also shown by Bally Sports Southeast. This is while the Revolution game will be shown on MLS Live on DAZN, NBCSWA, TeleXitos, and TV38 & myRITV.
